EXECUTIVE OF RED CROSS SOCIETY HOLDS MEETING.

A meeting of the Executive and Finance Committee of the Canterbury branch of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John was held on Friday; present:—Mr C. J. Ronaldson (chairman), Mrs IT. H. Smith, Miss Guthrie. Messrs J. W. Baty, 11. L. Bowker and Cyrus Williams. Financial statements showed that during April 199 ex-service patients had received attention at the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere Hills: at Queen Mary Hospital, Hunmer Springs: at the Kannerdale Home, at the Coronation Hospital. at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, at the Christchurch Hospital, ana as out-patients. Expenditure on clothing, tobacco, hospital requisites, extra food, motor hit e, amusements (including grants to the various matrons lor miscellaneous purchases) had totalled £l312s Bd. In addition, expenditure on Red Cross Club work, which provided moving pictures, furnishings, cards, newspapers, hooks, magazines and other amusements, had totalled £BO 1-s 4d. Accounts were passed for payment as milows;—Depot £6S 18s 9d, general £Bl 7d. Sister Christian reported on peace time work Jn the Rangiora district for the month of April as follows: —Classes had been well attended in most ol the districts, and for the examinations a good proportion of the students intended sitting. Instruction would be completed about the end of May. Arrangements had been made with Matron Voller of the Rangiora Hospital, to examine the classes, the written examinations being held the last week in May and the practical examinations the first two weeks in June. She recommended that classes be formed at Sefton, Loburn, Oxford, Swannanoa, Amberiey and West and East Ey reton. Association Rangiora, thanking him for the use of a bed, mattress and pillows, which were lent free for all practical demonstrations. A deputation consisting cr Mr LeadIcy and Mr Willcox (representing the Returned Soldiers’ Association) waited on the committee. Mr Leadley said a great number of returned soldiers were out of work, and the Hon E. A. Ransom had agreed to place thirty men immediately on West Coast road work, but blankets and cooking utensils were required. The association would have to assist wives and families of unemployed men until they earned some money and the deputation wished to know if (he Red Cross Society could help by supplying blankets, not as a precedent, , to be given to deserving cases. Air j Willcox said if the society could help in this direction it would ease the position. It was resolved, on the motion J of Mrs Smith, seconded by Mr Baty. that the committee vote £lO, Mrs Smith ; to make the best arrangements possible in procuring blankets up to the value j of this amount to be given to the , Returned Soldiers’ Association, and is- j sued by them on loan. It was resolved that the chairman, !
