Invitations hold good for the season. PROPOSED THREE NIGHTS’ CARNIVAL. Mr R. G. Morrison presided at a meeting of delegates representing the different sports bodies of Papanui. There were present: Messrs R. G. Morrison, A. B. Chister, J. Hadley, representing the Papanui Bowling and Tenis Club; H. Eagleton, J. Fantham and E. W. Worsdell, the Papanui Rugby Football Club; G. Radford, A. Thorn and C. Carr, the Waimairi Tennis Club; and T. A. Grose and A. E. Purse, the Amateur Athletic Club. Mr Worsdell, as convenor of the meeting, explained that his club had considered ways and means of raising money, but they thought a united effort by all the clubs would meet with much greater success. After discussion Mr Chester moved that a carnival be held some time in October. Mr Eagleton moved that the carnival take the form of a three-night bazaar. Mr Fantham moved that a queen carnival be held in conjunction with the carnival. The three resolutions were carried unanimously. Those present formed themselves into a committee to run a combined dance at the end of the month, Mr Worsdell to act as secretary. JUMBLE SALE. At the Memorial Hall next Saturday, May 10, at 2.30 p.m. the Styx Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild will hold a jumble sale. In addition to the usual clothes, etc., there will be cakes and vegetables on sale. NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS. A cocoa club has been formed at the Papanui School, and is self supporting. The children who bring their lunches to school pay threepence a week and get a hot cup of cocoa each day. The Papanui School playground has been levelled and sown in permanent grasses. It is over three acres in extent. The Minister of Education on a recent visit to the Waimairi School said it was the cleanest school he had ever been in. A remit was considered at the Waimairi School that the head master must reside in the school district. Mr Morrison pointed out that Papanui was well served with head masters. In addition to their own schools the head masters of Wharenui, Addington, Aranui, Belfast and Harewood all reside in Papanui. Evidently it is a desirable residential place. Mr R. D. Rule said that he had been to Wellington and had interviewed the new director of dental hygiene and had received a promise that as soon _as _ a nurse would be available Waimairi would receive consideration. There was £127 in hand for a clinic. Elmwood was making no move and Fendalton was half hearted, and he hoped the grouping would be done by the Education Department.

BASKETBALL. Hinemoa A against Te Kaka won by 3 goals to 2. Hinemoa B against Sunshine A lost 3 goals to 8. LOYAL PAPANUI LODGE, M.U„ 1.0.0. F. This year being the golden jubilee of the lodge the annual function will take the form of a grand jubilee ball, which will be held in the Memorial Hall on May 27. A very enjoyable evening was recently spent at the home of Mr and Mrs W. Sutherland, Harewood Road, Papanui, to celebrate the double birthday of Violet and Cyril. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Sutherland, Mr and Mrs Thomas, Mr and Mrs Palmer; Misses Violet Sutherland, Amy Sutherland, Pat Carroll, Alice Unwin, Isobel Francis, Doris Preece, Jessie King, May Osgood, Agnes Penny, and Doreen Palmer; Messrs Cyril Sutherland, Charles Sutherland, Wallie Unwin, Stan Brown, Laurie Marquet, Norman Johnston, Bill White, Master Arthur Palmer, Mervyn Thomas, and Neil Thomas. Games and competitions brought a very pleasant evening to a close. WAIMAIRI FOOTBALL CLUB. The Waimairi League Club juniors won their first match of the season against Riccarton by 12 to 6. The play of the team showed room for improvement, although it is rather early in the season for the lads to produce their true form. H. Spence shows promise of developing into a fine player. Tries were scored by D. Syme (2), C. Smith and J. Walker. If the team trains regularly and keeps together it should be near the top at the end of the season. Indications point to the club having an additional team this season. ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS. The fortnightly meeting of the Papanui Foresters was held in the court room last Monday week, the chief ranger, Brother A. V. Baker presiding. Sick pay was passed to three sick brothers and two were reported able to resume work. The sick visitor, Brother F. E. Foote, reported visiting one . of the stick brothers who was progressing favourably. The quinquinium returns were received from the registrar showing a surplus. Several members spoke congratulating the court on its very flourishing condition. It was decided to hold a ladies’ evening on the second Monday in May. One maternity claim was passed for payment. DOMAIN BOARD. The new pavilion at the Papanui Domain is about completed. It looks well and will be a great acquisition to the domain.
