UNION METHODIST CHURCH. The Rev E. W. Haines, M.A., commenced his ministry in Addington circuit on Sunday last, when he preached to large congregations in the Union Methodist Church. He dealt with the essentials of the Methodist Church and the working ideal that Wesley left to the people. “There was much to do,” he said, “and anything that may be done is only limited as our power exercises itself that we may be witnesses for Christ.” In the evening he urged a call to live “the utmost for the highest,” and to get into the habit of thinking much of Jesus Christ. By faith our fathers trusted in God, and why should we hesitate? After evening devotions, an afterchurch rally was held, to which practically the whole congregation remained. The Rev Hames briefly reviewed incidents of the camp at Oxford, and gave full opportunity to delegates to report on their impressions. Misses Olds, Ivy Wright and L. Burley spoke in regard to the young women’s camp at Rangiora. Mr E. H. Smith, secretary of the young men’s camp at Oxford, reported on the record gathering there and of the fine spiritual and devotional atmosphere that existed. Other speakers were Messrs W. T. Burley, an enthusiastic veteran camper, A. Clements, Sinclair Bowden, N. Grocott, F. Colechin, F. Bilcliff, Gordon M’Kenzie, and Ben Clements The service was closed by singing the camp chorus and Benediction. ST MARY'S, ADDINGTON. For several weeks past the members of the Union Church Tennis Club, Addington, have been busily engaged in a series of efforts to raise funds necessary for improvements to the courts and grounds. In connection with the efforts a king and queen competition has been in progress, the ladies working hard in the interest of their candidate, Miss Joan Clements, while the young men have been working assiduously in order to gain regal honours for Master Murray MacPherson. To conclude the carnival a concert and coronation ceremony was held in the School Hall, Selwyn Street, when it was announced that the young ladies had been successful, and accordingly Miss Clements was crowned with much pomp and ceremony by Mr E. H. Down. The queen attended by a retinue of ladies in waiting, mistress of robes, flower girls, and pages, mace and honours bearers, and trumpeters. The picturesque procession reflected great credit on Miss B. Bowden, under whose guidance the performers went through the necessary ceremonial very successfully.
