BULLER NOTES.

MAGISTRATE’S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held on Wednesday morning before Mr W. Mel drum, S.M. Francis Donohue for failure to provide maintenance in respect of his wife was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, the warrant not to be issued providing the sum of £1 13s be paid into Court within seven days. William Taylor, for disobedience of a maintenance order was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, the warrant not to be issued so long as he pays the sum of £2 a fortnight in reduction of his arrears. The charge against Herbert Mitchell of allowing a horse to wander was dismissed, but on a charge of cattle wandering he was fined 5s and 15s costs. A similar charge against Michael Shine was dismissed. Robert Neil, for allowing stock to wander, was convicted and ordered to pay costs 10s 6d, and William Dalkie and Mungo liimter, on a similar charge, were fined 5s and costs. Albert George Kearns, for lighting a fire contrary to the by-laws, was convicted and fined £1 ar*d costs. KARAMEA. The Rugby season opened in Karamea district on Saturday last with a match between Taffy town and Little Wanganui. In the first half the Taffvtown men were too fast for their opponents, scoring sixteen points to their six, but Little Wanganui retaliated later, the final score being sixteen to fifteen in Taffytown’s favour. The hockey in the district also opened on Saturday with teams from Opanara and Little Wanganui, the latter winning by 11 points to nil, but the former had several young players and played one short. The Community Hall at Taffy town is now well under way. It will prove a great boon to the men in camp. Umerc Rugby team met Karamea also on Saturday and were beaten 12 points to 3. RAILWAY DANCE. The members of the Railway Department held a most successful dance on Monday evening, the ladies’ committee being congratulated on the way they worked to make the dance such a success. During the dances items were given by Miss K. Richards (’cello) and Mr T. Mallett (songs). The newly appointed station master (Mr W. Miller) was present and presented the prizes for a novelty dance to Mr and Mrs J. Huddlestone. TOTALISATOR FIGURES. The meeting at Reef ton yesterday closed the West Coast circuit, the total* isator figures showing that Westport heads the list: £ s. A great number of people from the Buller district made the journey both by service cars and private cars. Mr E. W. Spencer, president of the Reefton Jockey Club, gave much time and attention to visitors, making them cordially welcome. The continuous line of cars coming home through the gorge last night with their lights flashing appeared almost like a torchlight procession. ACCIDENTS. Mr Gilbert, when on his rounds with the mail yesterday, noticed a dog caught in a fence and went to release it. The dog, however, mistook his intention and caught him by the thumb, which was so lacerated it is feared he may have to lose part of his hand. Mr Gilbert is a prominent cricketer and footballer. Mr Hammond, a worker at Tircrca, had the misfortune to break his leg as the result of a fall from a motor cycle. He was brought in to the District Hospistal last evening. PERSONALS. Nurse Meehan has accepted a position at Kawatiri Maternity Hospital and commenced duties yesterday. Miss Meehan was for two and a half years charge nurse at the Lambert Mental Hospital, Edinburgh. Mr Alf Thompson returned from Greymouth yesterday. Mrs A. Warren, of Takaka, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs Adams, of Peel Street. Mr T. Penman, managing director of Frank A. Cook, Ltd., Christchurch, is spending a holiday in Westport, later going on to the glaciers. Mr and Mrs Gould left yesterday for Nelson. Mr T. Parfitt, who has been attending the Labour Conference in Wellington, returned last night. Mr A. M’Narn, of Ngakawau, returned yesterday from Chr^tchurch. Mrs White left this morning for Greymouth. Mr and Mrs Trainer left for Christchurch to-day. HOKITIKA ITEMS. (Special to the “Star.”) HOKITIKA, May 2. At the monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society, the secretary', Mr D. J. Evans, was appointed to attend the conference to be held at Christchurch regarding the control of deer. He leaves for Christchurch tomorrow. The society decided to order 500.000 rainbow trout ova from Rotorua, to be distributed when hatched between the Grey and Westland Societies. Tt was also decided to apply' to the Tourist Department for a supply of ova for Lake Mapourika, the society to hatch and liberate the fry. The society has now erected a curator’s residence at the Lake ( Kanieri hatchery. Mr S. Ridland, who has been appointed curator for the season, has entered on his duties. THE WEATHER. After the showery weather of the past two day's, to-day broke fine and clear. The Southern Alps have commenced to put on their winter mantle, and the atmosphere was decidedly' cooler this morning. PERSONAL. Mr J. L. Menzies, ex-head master of the Bur wood School, Christchurch, with his family', arrived last evening and took up his duties as rector of the Hokitika District High School to-day. Mr J. D. Burns, Supervisor of the Hokitika Postal Department, has been transferred to the telegraph branch, Christchurch. He will be succeeded by Mr R. L. Horn, from Napier. Mr G. W. Shirley', postmaster at Kumara, is being transferred to Walton. Mr R. M. Gibb, exchange clerk at Little River, has been transferred to • Hokitika as cadet. £
