DISMAL DESMONDS MOAN ABOUT TRADE IN CITY.

For the past few months, with prices low, the croaker has been having a glorious run in Christchurch. He has at last got material enough for his moaning to satisfy him. and in clubs, on streets, and in trams you will see him indulging in his life’s work in an access of lugubriousness. On the other side of the Tasman the same Dismal Desmonds have been having such a good run that the reputations of several of the biggest firms might have been jeopardised had it not been for the prompt action of a few l of their number, who have threatened to issue writs against anyone moaning about the state of trade to the detriment of the firms concerned. It is the same in Christchurch. An enterprising business man sees fit to erect new premises, and immediately a rush of information breaks out about what the gentleman's bank manager said about the state of his account in a moment of confidence. For these Moaning Matthews always seem to be able to get the straight tip from the bank manager or some other person likely to know. In the mouths of these men, the city is practically bankrupt, and many of the big firms are about to close their doors. The motor trade is a splendid butt for the arrows the unhappy fraternity love - to fire.
