Salaries paid to Cabinet Ministers, members of the Civil Service, soldiers and sailors have never been high in France. Even by the increased rates authorised recently they are absurdly low compared with ours. A Minister for War. for example, is paid £ISOO a year. lie is expected out of this to entertain royally, keep a motor-car and a well-dressed wife. A French vice-ad-miral lives on the princely pay of £620 per annum. A brigadier-general re ceives £420 per annum, and a seconrllieutenant is supposed to have a splendid time on £IOO a vear—rather less than £0 a month.
