FROM THE “STAR” SIXTY YEARS AGO

ADVERTISEMENTS and NEWS OF APRIL 3. 1870. Art Exhibition.—There was a fair attendance yesterday. The Exhibition will positively close to-day. A dinner and ball are, we understand, in contemplation, and will come off at an early date. Coach Communication.—We understand that a coach has been started be* tween Burnham (Leeston Road station) and Southbridge, via Leeston. It leaves Southbridge in time to catch the first train to Christchurch, and returns from Burnham on the arrival of the last train from here. j.j Acclimatisation Society.—A special meeting of the council was held at the Literary Institute yesterday afternoon for the purpose of considering the most advisable measures to be adopted for securing an importation of insectivorous birds. After some conversation, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Nottidge, that the sum of £250 be at once expended on procuring rooks, starlings, goldfinches and jackdaws from England. This it was proposed to meet as follows: —£50 cash in hand, £IOO by subscription amongst farmers and

others most calculated to be benefited by the importation, and £IOO by guarantors of £5 each, the amount, if not voted by the Provincial Council, to be provided for out of the future funds of the society, the council being of the opinion that the birds on arrival should not be sold, but turned loose in large flocks at stated places.
