Masterton Racing Club’s Meeting Opens To-morrow.

HISTORIC CARRIES BIG WEIGHT, BUT MAY BE HARD TO BEAT IN CUP.

(Special to the “ Star/*) WELLINGTON, April 3. Weather prospects are good at present for the Masterton meeting tomorrow. The course is an excellent one with a long straight and gives stickers their chance. Racing will commence at 11.45 a.m. with the JUVENILE HANDICAP, of 180 sovs. Five furlongs. Autopay 8 13 Sunstead 7 5 Arajean 7 13 Benign 7 5 Royal Open Cheque 7 5 Routine 7 5 Valrewa 7 3 Miss Kalmuk 7 3 Hastings 7 5 Lady Ronald 7 0 Autopay of course stands out on form and should start a good favourite. Royal Routine, and Valrewa are two improvers, particularly Royal Routine, who should develop into a really good performer. Autopay’s experience should stand him in good stead. NOVICE STAKES, of 120 sovs; six furlongs (weight 8-s)—Agrestic, Hystride, Sunkissed, Master of Arts, Satin Bird, White Doe, Cluny, Magic Land, Maidstone, Panatrope, Spearful, Only Fair, Lady Gen. A poor class lot, with few with any pretensions to form. Spearful, Sunkised. and Hystride may be the best of them. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. One mile and a half. Red Fuchsia 10 12 Essential 9 13 Elicit 3 0 9 Fiery Comet 9 0 Tunbridge 3 0 5 Painting 9 0 P.ouex 10 2 Red Fuchsia and Elicit are two solid gallopers but their form does not measure up with that of Tunbridge at Awapuni, who comes in well taking a line through Pahu and Royal Opera. Rouex if at his best, would have a chance, but he has been disappointing. Form points decidedly to Tunbridge. LAWN HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. One mile. Royal Opera 9 9 General Gas 7 3 Austerity SlO First Ruler 7 2 Tourist 8 6 Fallow 7 0 Airforce 8 0 Myola 7 0 Water Spear 8 0 Easterly 7 0 Mothplane 7 3 Royal Opera is in such good form at present that even with 9.9 he can not be discarded. Tourist is nicely placed and Waterspear is in at a handy weight. A likely pair of light-weights are Mothplane and General Gas. Mothplane was beaten by welter weights at Dannevirke and should go much better under 7.3. General Gas was unlucky at Awapuni. This pair may be too good for the top weights.

MASTERTON CUP, of 250 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Historic 9 7 Dolomite 7 4 Spearmiss 7 11 Full Mark 7 4 Grecian 7 6 Rameses 7 3 Stanchion 7 6 Duellona 7 2 Billion 7 5 Red Fuchsia 7 0 Historic has a good horse’s weight but he is coming to his best and scored in the spring against better fields than this. Spearmiss may not be , quite ready but Grecian is a fit horse 1 and looks sure to give a good account of himself with 7.6. Of G. Neill’s pair Stanchion and Full Mark, Stanchion should do best. His Woodville form was attractive and he should be a better horse now. Billion will also have to be considered and Duellona cannot ’ be ruled out with 7.2. Historic may be troubled most by Stanchion and Grecian. FLYING HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. Six furlongs. Panther 8 10 Malayan 7 4 Goblin Melissa 7 4 Market 8 7 Moorland 7 4 Dobbin 8 3 Mandy 7 2 Keddar 8 0 Veronese 7 0 Pantler has won over this distance on this course and is liable to do so again. Goblin Market is now up in the weights but is undoubtedly a good galloper. Keddar will have a course and field to suit him and may be too good for Dobbin at the weights, al though Dobbin’s Awapuni form was attractive. Malayon has speed and he and Mandy should do-best of the light weights. Keddar and Malayan may show up well. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. of 130 sovs. Seven furlongs. If Statuary is fancied he may be : the best of the top weights for there is only a range of 191 b in the handicap. Evening Hero and Emotion may both show up well for they are improvers.
