OBITUARY

WILLIAM BOWIS. The death occurred last week-end of Mr William Bowis, a well-known Doyleston farmer, in his sixty-sixth year. The late Mr Bowis took up land at Doyleston many years ago, and proved a successful farmer. He added to his holding from time to time, until he acquired a large property, upon which he carried on cropping, dairying and stock-raising on a large scale. In recent years he became widely known as a successful breeder and exhibitor of milking Shorthorn cattle, his stock winning a number of championships at the Canterbury and Ellesmere shows. His herd was strengthened by importations, for he considered that money spent on new blood was a sound investment. Although he did not take an active part in public life, he manifested a live interest in matters pertaining to the communit}' - welfare. Fie was a staunch supporter of the Methodise Church and a member of the board of trustees of the Leeston Church. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Sarah Quigley, and a family of four daughters and four sons. One son, who served in the Great War, died some years ago. There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place at the Ellesmere Public Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev G. P. Hunt, and the pall-bearers were the four sons, Messrs Alan, Cuthbert, Leonard and James Bowis.
