RAILWAYS DEPARTMENT PRVIDED EXTRA WORK.

(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, April 2. The Minister of Railways, the Hon W. B. Taverner, informs a correspondent of the ‘‘Star’’ that the Department, from October 1 till the end of March, has employed 1276 additional men, of whom 554 were tradesmen, and during that period it has expended £160,000 on extra works to provide employment. Mr Taverner, in his capacity as Commissioner of State Forests, has in hand a large scheme of afforestation in the southern part of the South Island, which will give a considerable amount of employment during the coming winter. ______________
