There was a large attendance of members at last night’s meeting of the Philosophical Institute, over which Dr R. R. D, Milligan presided. Professor Percival read a paper on the life history of a river mussel (Diplodon lutulcatus) in which he described the formation and early stages of the mussel. Mr K F. Stead read papers on “Bird .Life in The Snares and Auckland Islands” and “A Preliminary Note on the Petrels of Stewart Island.” Both papers were excellently illustrated by slides. Mr Stead also reported the first appearance in New Zealand of a migratory plover, associated with the subArctic regions. A paper by Dr Frankel on “A Case of Variegation in Barley” was also read.
