PARKING SPACE IS PROVIDED ON WHARF.

NO CHARGE WILL BE MADE BY HARBOUR BOARD

Parking accommodation for twentyeight motor-cars has been prepared b)the Lyttelton Harbour Board at the end of the ferry wharf. The space is available from 6 a.m., until half an hour after the arrival of the ferry steamer from Wellington and from 6 p.m., until half an hour after the de parture of the steamer for Wellington. In a report on the matter to-day, the secretary -of the board, Mr C. 11. Clibborn, stated that at Wellington a charge of 6d a car was made for motor vehicles using the ferry wharf with passengers, but at that port the approach to the wharf was controlled by gates and gate keepers and the charge was easily collected. At Lyttelton there were no facilities for collecting a fee for use of the parking spaces provided for waiting cars and the cars were not intended to run on to any part of the wharf other than the parking space. The total accommodation approved by the board was for twenty-eight cars, of which twelve will be accommodated on railway land and sixteen on the board’s property, and it was not therefore desirable that the board should make a charge. The cost of preparing the spaces for sixteen cars was £2O. When conferring with the board’s chairman and officers recently about the accommodation, Messrs F. W. Freeman, president, and J. S. Hawkes. secretary, of the Canterbury Automobile Association, indicated the willingness of the Association to contribute to the cost. He recommended that pending further developments, no charge be made for use of the parking areas, but that the Canterbury Automobile Association be asked to contribute £lO towards the cost of the accommodation. The report was adopted.
