SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The regular bridge evening, which is held on the first Tuesday of the month, took place last night at the Canterbury* Women’s Club. Eighteen tables had been provided in the reception room, which was fragrant with the scent of liliums arranged in bowls about the room. At their residence in Springfield Road, St Albans. Mr and Mrs T. J. Chappie entertained a number of friends to celebrate the coming-of-age of their niece, Gwenda, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs V. A. Griffin. A pleasant evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. Mr G. R. Allen proposed the health of the guest of the evening, after which her engagement to Ernest, younger son of Mr and Mrs T. Atkinson, of Westport, was announced. Those present were: —Miss Gwenda Griffin, Mrs J. Power, Mr and Mrs W. Allen, Mr and Mrs R.
