APPLICATION TO ERECT PETROL BOWSER REFUSED. The Citv Council met last .evening; present—The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) and Councillors D. G. Sullivan, M.P., F. R. Cooke, E. Parlane, T. IT. Butterfield, A. E. Armstrong, IT. T. 1. Thacker, A. W. Beaven, W. H. Williamson, J. Parlane, Annie I. Fraer, E. M. Andrews, J. W. Beanland and M. E. Lyons. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Elizabeth R M’Combs and J. A. Flesher. On the motion of Councillor Thacker Councillor Annie I. Fraer. who has been acting-chairman of the Reserves Committee for the past three months, was appointed chairman of the committee. TENDERS. On the recommendation of the Electricity Committee, the tender of Lawrence and Hansen of £1964 4s 6d for the supply of 4000 yards of 11,000 volt .06 square inch underground cable and accessories was accepted. There were ten tenders, the highest being £2574 14s Bd. For the supply of forty tons of coke for the Municipal Electricity Department, the tender of J. B. Pearson, at £126, was accepted. The Electricity Committee was - empowered to purchase a lathe at a cost of up to £IOO, the decision being left in the hands of the engineer and Councillor Beaven. PETROL STATION. The Town Planning Committee reported that an application had been received for permission to erect a petrol service station at the corner of Barrington and Milton Streets. Although the property on which it is desired to erect the station adjoined a business area, the establishment of the station would mean that the area set aside for. business purposes in that locality would be exceeded. In the circumstances the committee recommended that the application be not granted. The report was adopted. WATER METERS. The Water Supply Committee reported that owing to the increased rate at which applications for the installation of water meters were being received, the council’s stock would shortly be exhausted. As the council had always had in hand a large supply of spare parts for one type of meter, it had been customary in the past to obtain supplies of that particular type, but it .was considered that by calling for tenders lor the supply of, say, 2000 meters, better prices could be obtained and in the event of the present meter not being the selected one, the spare parts of that meter in hand would not amount to such a large cost proportionately. In the circumstances the committee asked for authority to call for tenders for the supply of 2000 meters. Authority was granted. CIVIC THEATRE. The Finance Committee reported that it had given very careful consideration as to what form of sign should Lie installed in front of the Civic Theatre, and recommended that the offer of Mr 11. Jacobs to erect an electric sign reading “ Civic ” in two ways in two feet letters at a completed cost of £290 be accepted. As the erection of the sign would be of benefit to the lessee of the hall for picture purposes, it had been arranged that he should pay at the rate of £4 *

per month during: the time) he was occupying the hall to cover the cost of maintenance and interest on the outlay for the sign. TILFORD STREET BRIDGE. Councillor Butterfield asked the chairman of the Finance Committee whether a sum would he placed on the estimates for the widening of the Tilford Street bridge. lie said that the bridge was a source of danger on account of being narrow. Councillor Sullivan (chairman of the Finance Committee) said that the committee would consider- the matter if it received a recommendation from the Works Committee to that effect. He knew the bridge and he agreed that it was time something was done regarding widening it. Councillor Cooke, chairman of the Works Committee, said that at its last meeting the committee had decided to urge that provision be made in the estimates for widening the bridge.
