BRIGHTON BOROUGH AFFAIRS DISCUSSED.

The New Brighton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor. Mr J. H. Shaw, presiding. Present: Councillors F. D. Muirson, E. Smith, A. E. Lawrv, E. A. M. Leaver, J. S. Ainsworth, J. M’Creanor, S. Bargrove, R. Stokes and G. W. Bishop. The South Brighton Surf Club’s Carnival Committee applied for a permit to conduct a carnival on the sea-front at the South Brighton Surf Club’s pavilion on Easter Monday. The permit was granted, the Mayor pointing out that this, was the date on which the filming of New Brighton by the Government Publicity Department would take place. Councillor Ainsworth moved that the Tramway Board be asked to level the heaps on their dump in Page’s Road. The motion was carried. The Works Committee reported that correspondence had been received from the South Brighton Progress League calling the attention of the council to the following: (a) The blackberrv pest in South Brighton, especially in Halsey Street; (b) asking that a sum of money be placed on the estimates for forming a footpath and side channel in Craddock Street; (c) asking the council to clear channelling and edge of footpath in Estuary Road, south of Bridge Street: (d) asking that the pot holes in Bridge and Blake Streets be attended to. In regard to the first matter it was resolved that this would receive attention when men were available and that an estimate of the cost of forming a footpath in Craddock Street be obtained. It was resolved that the work of clearing the channelling and edge of footpath be done as soon as circumstances permit. The chairman stated that the potholes :n Bridge and Blake Streets would be attended to. The Works Committee also reported that the North Beach and Waimairi Progress League had written stating that the footpaths in Swan Street extension were overgrown with lupin and that the footpath in Berry Street extension was badly in need of attention. The track from Osborne Terrace to Swann Street was in a very neglected state. Brittania Street was in a verv bad state of repair (this did not refer to the sand encroaching). Mirriott’s Road was almost impossible for push bicycles. This could be remedied by binding with rotten scoria. On the motion of Councillor Smith it was decided to have these matters attended to during the ensuing finanThe Works Committee’s report was adopted.
