COUNCIL WILL GET £2OO RENT FOR REST ROOMS

A rental of £2OO a year will be charged the Plunket Society for the use of the buildings in the Chester Street fire station, according to a decision of the City Council at last evening’s meeting. The annual cost of interest and sinking funds will amount to £260, but the amount of £6O will be met by the council as a donation to the society’s funds. The Finance Committee reported that it had carefully gone into the question of the finances of the Plunket Society, and was of the opinion that an annual rental of £2OO should be charged to the society for the use of the Plunket Buildings. It was estimated that the annual cost of interest and sinking fund to pay for the alterations within a term of fourteen years would be approximately £260 per annum, but, in view of the good work rendered to the community by the society and the fact that it was practically maintained by voluntary contributions, and, further, that the council had power under the Municipal Corporations Act to assist in this connection, the committee recommended that the £6O, being the difference between the rent and the interest and sinking fund charges, be met by the council. The Plunket Society had agreed to control the public lavatories in the building for a term of twelve months, the position to be reviewed at the expiration of that time. The society would make no charge for the control, but would be entitled to receive the money from the slot machines. The committee had instructed the Town Clerk to take the necessary steps to obtain the sanction of the Local Government Loans Board to the raising of a loan of up to £3OOO to cover the cost of the alterations. The committee's report was adopted.
