Racing and Trotting.

(BY

“ARGUS.”)

RACING NOTES. (rood fields have been secured for the first day’s events at South Canterbury, and the racing on Thursday and Saturday should provide a lot of interest. Riccarton stables are well represented and they should secure a good share of the stakes. * In connection with the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on Thursday and Saturday, a special train will leave Christchurch each day at 7.42 a.m., taking passengers to the course. The return train will leave Timaru at 6.35 p.m., and is due in Christchurch at 10 p.m. * * * * H. Nurse has two candidates for the first day’s hurdle race at South Canterbury. A. J. Peart will ride Lancer, while L. Evans will be on After Ten. * * * * The North Island jockey, J. Barry, will be at the South Canterbury meeting this ■week. His riding engagements include Corinthic, Giggleswick, Sleipner and Charmeuse, from H. Nurse’s stable. * * * * C. Emerson’s mounts on the first day at South Canterbury will be Hoylake, Gay Sonnet and Gay Crest, all of whom look in good trim. * * * & H. Young has again taken up his residence at Riccarton. He will be at the South Canterbury meeting, where his first day’s riding engagements will include Kentish Lady and Hazq. * * * * F. P. Claridge will have two hurdlers at South Canterbury this week. Mime is an acceptor on the first day and will be ridden by D. Hall, who may be on Troilus on the second day. , * * * * L. J. Ellis was riding work at Riccarton this, morning. He has a full list of riding engagements the first day at South; Canterbury, his mounts being Appeal, Buoyant, Quinopal, Fair Money and Coupling. 5F * v * G. J. Pine will take Don Jose and Silver Coot to the South Canterbury meeting this week. So far no riding arrangements have been made. * * * * Heisler has done a lot of useful work lately. He will be a competitor in the hurdle events at South Canterbury, where G. Salt will ride him. * * * * E. Shaw has been engaged to ride Rangatahi, Valuator and Royal Limond at South Canterbury. R. Coveney's riding engagements on the first, day of the. South Canterbury meeting include Arrowmir, Miss Nightraid. and Adelphi. # * * A. 11. Eastwood will have the rides on Starshooter, Solgele, Sailing Home, Pink Paper and Colonel Quex on the first day of the South Canterbury meeting. * * -Jr. A. E. Ellis will ride Arikiwai, First Sight, Solmuri and Lord Thomond in their South Canterbury engagements. * * *' * I. Tilson will handle Bonatic in the hurdle races at South Canterbury. So far he has no other riding engagements at the meeting. * * * * Count Cavour pulled up lame after working at Riccarton this morning, and the Solferino gelding may require a spell.

A chestnut yearling filly, by Hunting Song from the Solferino mare Knocklyn, has been broken in by FI. Nurse and has made her appearance on the Riccarton tracks. She is a small but neatly made youngster.

The Riccarton racecourse bowling green has been closed down for the season, and it will receive early attention, .so as to be in order for an early opening in the spring. The club has done well in its first season, the members showing great enthusiasm, while many of them have made great progress at the game.

It has been decided that Concentrate will have to miss his Sydney Cup engagement, and he was withdrawn by cablegram on Monday morning. Cimabue, however, is to go for his Doncaster Handicap engagement, and he will leave Wellington on Friday. Whether he will be accompanied by Royal Duke and Gesture is as yet undecided.

11. Kingan, who now trains Roi de Val, has been schooling the Lackham. gelding at Trentham.

The ex-Awapuni and Foxton trainer. A. E. Browne, is now located at Trent, ham, where he has Beaumont and another in his charge.

The present season is proving Cimabue’s most profitable one on the turf. At two years old, he won £2090; at three years, £1060; at four years, £1722; and in the present season, at five years, £2360. His total winnings amount to £7232. He has started seventeen times this season for six wins, two seconds and two thirds. Last year he won the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton. This season notable victories include the Feilding Stakes, Jackson Stakes and Manawatu Stakes. *

Rational 11. is making good progress from the injury he received on the eve of the Wellington meeting, and resumed trotting exercise on the track last week. The Rossendale gelding looks well, and has been entered for the open mile events at the Avondale autumn meeting.

The late Mr Robert Stevens, for whom the flags flew at half-mast at Awapuni last week, died on the eve of the meeting at his home in Mr Stevens for very many years had been a familiar figure in New Zealand sporting circles. First as an" amateur rider, later on as an owner and as trainer of his own horses, and for a quarter of a century as. judge and timekeeper for the Manawatu Racing Club, he was well known to a great number of North Island racegoers. In business he was still more widely known as a dealer in live stock and as a buyer for meat exporting concerns. The deceased sportsman, who had reached his eightieth year, had suffered from twelve months’ painful illness before death brought him relief.

Red Fuchsia should be in good fettle by the time the winter racing season rolls round. At Awapuni last week, he was having his second race over hurdles for some time, and, after being handy throughout, finished fourth. He had 11.11 on his back, and had no chance of conceding Omeo 391 b as the event was run, for the mile and three-quarters was compassed in record time.

When making his first appearance over hurdles, Mountain Guide displayed promise by running second to Golden Wedding in the Poroti Hurdle Race at the Whangarei spring meeting. He has done very little racing since, but if started in hurdle events at Whangarei this week he should perform creditably.

Our Comet, who has been purchased by the Auckland trainer, A. Rhodes, and shipped to Sydney, is an untried two-year-old by Day Comet from Lady Hill, a daughter of Bezonian and Lady Hune. Our Comet is a well developed juvenile, and, as he is very forward in condition, he should be ready to race soon after his arrival in Sydney. He has shown abundance of speed on the track, and, properly placed, should be capable of winning races for his new owner. TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting close on Thursday next at noon. ** =t* 4: * The Cheviot Trotting Club's meetings are gradually growing in popularity. The racecourse was found to be unsuitable for galloping races and the club, which was originally a racing one, subsequently went over to the trotting ranks. The course, although not of good shape, is quite satisfactory for trotting and pacing, and being a righthanded course, many horses race better there than on other courses. The officials are hard working and now have some knowledge of what is necessary for the successful carrying out of a meeting. The club’s secretary, Mr T. West, is quite a live wire, and his energy and tact have had much to do with the success of the meetings. Last Saturday’s fixture was favoured by ideal weather and was easily the best yet held by the club. The course was in good order for a country track, and a pleasing feature was the promptness in which the events were got off, the last race being run well up to time. * * * sis R R Rprrv "hnd Romano*; Colorado

R. B. Berry had Romanos, Colorado and' Checkers, all two-year-olds, accepted for the Cheviot meeting last Saturday. Checkei's started in the mile harness event, but he did not show up prominently. Colorado was an acceptor in the Spotswood Handicap, run over a mile and a half, and Romanos was in the M’Kenzie Handicap, a race run over a mile and a quarter. Under the rules Romanos and Colorado were ineligible to start, as no two-year-old can race over a further distance than a mile prior to April 1.

# * * The American pacer Chilmat has been for some time in C. S. Donald’s stable, and he wa's racing at Cheviot last Saturday. He did not go up to expectations, and it is probable he will be returned to his owner at once.

The Author Dillon—Marie Tempest pacer, Actor, gave a lot of promise as a young horse, when trained by B. Jarden, but he did not train on satisfactorily. He was raced at Cheviot on Saturday and showed a glimpse of his early form. In the Cup, run over two miles, he was always prominent and finished fourth, just behind the placed horses. He was started iri the M’Kenzie Flandicap. run over a mile and a quarter, and when well up with the leaders he collided with Warrenore at the back of the course. His driver, M. Holmes, was thrown out of the sulky, getting a rather nasty fall. Actor seems to be sound and he may do better in some of his future engagements.

The right-handed course at Cheviot suited Bingen Wilkes and he raced much better than usual, finishing second to Harley Dillon in the mile saddle event.

(A doubtful starter at Masterton). KAIKOURA TROTTING CLUB A meeting of the committee of the Kaikoura Trotting Club was held on Friday evening. Correspondence was received from the Trotting Association advising that the club’s action in dealing with inquiries on race day had been endorsed by the association. Mr C. A. Davis wrote applying for a refund of nomination fees. It was decided to grant the request. The stipendiary steward’s report was received and was favourably commented upon. The secretary presented a statement of receipts and expenditure for the meeting, which showed an approximate credit balance of £142. The president complimented the club on the success of the meeting. He stated that despite the extra expenditure the results financially were very gratifying. He wished to place on record the thanks of the committee to those who had contributed to the success of the meeting and in particuWAIKATO TROTTING CLUB. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. March 31.
