Miss Spedding, Bligh’s Road, is touring in the North Island with Mr and Mrs G. C. Smith, St Albans. Mrs W. Whyte has returned to Sumner after a visit to Mrs Porter at Coalgate. Mr and Mrs R. M. D. Johnson have returned to Mount Torlesse, after spending a week in Christchurch; Mrs J. Jamieson, who has been visiting Mrs Ziesler, Timaru, has returned to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. W. Adams and Miss Adams, who have been visiting Christchurch, have returned to Timaru. Mrs C. H. Lewis, Avon Street, is visiting Mrs Alec Macfarlane, Weka Street, Fendalton. Colonel and the Hon Mrs Meldon, England, and Miss Barbara Gould will be leaving this week for the Franz Josef Glacier. Mr A. C. Haig and the Misses E. and M. Haig. Perth, Western Australia, are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs J. R. Coburn, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs Campbell, at Mount Pleasant, returned to her home at Greymouth on Saturday. Miss Peggy Chapman, •who has been staying with Mrs George Helmore at Milbrook, returned to Timaru on Saturday. Miss Marten, of Te Aroha, who has been appointed to the position of headmistress at the Kaiapoi School, commences her duties to-day. Miss Gladys Sumner has returned to Christchurch after spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and. Mrs B. Sumner, at Paroa. Mrs Cracroft Wilson, president of the Christchurch Branch of the Plunket Society, will attend the conference of Plunket Society delegates which opens at Wellington on Thursday. Miss Aroha Clifford will fly to Feilding on her way to the Aero Club’s pageant at blastings on Saturday, and later will go on to Hawera and Auckland. Mrs B. Cockburn-Hood, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to the North Island last evening. She proposes to spend the winter months in Auckland.

Miss M. Cotterell, Canterbury College, has been nominated to the Royal Holloway College as the candidate lor the 1930 Royal Holloway College Scholarship. Miss E. M. Hardie has beer, appointed to a C grade position at the Avonside Girls’ High School. Miss G. Digby, who holds a D grade position, has been appointed to a C grade position. Miss Belle Renaut will be the contralto soloist for the annual performance of the Lenten Cantata “Gethsemane,” at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside/ next Sunday (Passion Sunday), Miss Mildred Russell having gone to Sydney to reside. Engagements Announced. The engagement is announced of Alice, fourth daughter of Mr W. W. Keighley, Hackthorne Road, Cashmere Hills, to John, second son of Mr? A. E. Spencer, Young Street, Spreydon. The engagement is announced of Winifred Daisy, youngest daughter of Mr R. Collings and the late Mrs Coiling.?, of 48, Warrington Street, St Albans, to Norman Colin, youngest son of Mr and Mrs A. Mowat, "Lake i Raupo,” Waikari.
