DYER’S PASS HIGHWAY WILL BE IMPROVED.

In accordance with an agreement entered into for maintenance and other work on the Dyer’s Pass highway, and in response to a request from the Heathcote County Council, the City *. ouncil has decided to place the necessary sum on the next year’s estimates. The Works Committee’s report presented to last evening’s meeting of the council was as follows:—“In April of last year, the council entered into an agreement with the Heathcote County Council to contribute 60 per cent of the cost of maintaining the Dyer’s Pass highway and to pay a similar proportion of the cost of carrying out certain widening and metalling of the road. The estimated cost of the work was £SOOO, towards which the Main Highways Board contributed a £3 for £1 subsidy. The council’s share would i therefore be £750, to be spread over a period of two years. The amount necessary to cover the work to be carried out during the first year was placed on last year's estimates, and the Heathcote County Council has now written asking that an assurance be given that the proportion of the second year will be placed on the coming year s estimates as the county desires to commence the work immediately after March 31, thus absorbing some of the unemployed. “In the circumstances the committee recommends that an assurance be given that the amount will be placed on the estimates. It is also recommended that the sum of £SO, which the council agreed to contribute towards the cost of maintaining the highway, be also placed on the estimates.” The recommendations were adopted.
