NEW RULE OF ROAD FOR COUNTRY PEDESTRIANS.

A telegram from New Plyrmouth received yesterday stated that at a meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association, Mr W. G. Walkley had urged on the North Island Motor Union the need for legislation making it obligatory upon pedestrians to walk on the right-hand side of country roads. This has long been a proposal advocated by Mr F. W. Johnston at the Canterbury Automobile Association's meetings, and he told a reporter this morning that he agreed in every respect with the text of the telegram. For that matter, he said, the ideas appeared to have been culled from him. Mr Johnston also said that the matter had first been brought before his notice five or six y-ears ago when an old schoolmaster at Belfast had twice been knocked off his bicycle by motor-cars when cycling on his correct side of the road. After that the cyclist rode on his wrong side of the road. He had escaped any further accident. Mr Johnston said that he had been hammering away at the question and he was pleased to see that the idea was being taken up in other parts. With the co-operation of other automobile associations, they could hope to get some definite results from continued agitation. The ideas outlined in the telegram were quite sound and the matter should not be allowed to rest, as it was time some definite action was J taken.
