PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH BEGINS IN FINE WEATHER.

Otago Win Toss, But Batsmen Make Poor Start On A Perfect Pitch. In ideal weather and on a perfect pitch, the Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury was started at Lancaster Park to-day.

The teams were:— Canterbury—l. B. Cromb (Old Boys), J. Jacobs (Riccarton), C. G. Crawford (St Albans), C. S. Gibbs (Riccarton), A. W. Roberts (Riecaron), R. O. Talbot (Old Collegians), N. ■>orreen (St Albans), J. L. Powell (Ricarton), J. L. Kerr (West Christhurch), J. T. Burrows (Old Boys), G. Talbot (Old Collegians), G. B. irose (Old Boys) twelfth man. Otago—L. Giles, W. Strang (captain), A. Knight, V. G. Cavanagh, A. Gale, J. Barron, D. Moloney, J. A. Punning, P. Monk, J. Hawkesworth and G. Lemin. Otago won the toss and started batting at 11.5, L. Giles and W. Strang (captain) facing the bowling of J. T. Burrows and C. S. Gibbs. The batsmen started very quietly, and 10 did not appear on the board for twenty minutes. Strang, after half an hour, began to hit more freely, and scored the first four of the game to the leg boundary off Gibbs. .After five overs, I. B. Cromb replaced Gibbs with the ball at the north end. Giles reached double figures with a pretty on drive to the boundary after half an hour’s batting. At 11.45 R. O. Talbot took the ball from Burrows at the south end, Strang cutting his second delivery to the boundary. After forty minutes' batting, Strang brought up the half-century with a four off Talbot. Shortly after he gave a chance to Roberts in the slips, but the Canterbury man dropped what was a hot ball. The First Wicket. When his total was 17, Gijes went lbw to Talbot. His innings lasted fifty minutes. A. Knight came in. The second ball of Cromb’s sixth over clean bowled Knight, smashing the off pin. He was replaced by V. G. Cavanagh. Play had then been in progress for an hour, the score being 61:—2—3. Strang was batting stolidly and had 39 on. After completing an hour’s batting, Strang was caught by third man, G. L. Talbot, off Cromb. 65—3—32. A. Gale joined Cavanagh. The three wickets fell for the addition of only ten runs, and modified the complexion of the game. Seventy came up at 12-20, but Gibbs and Cromb were keeping the batsmen very quiet. Gibbs was now on at the south end and the wind seemed to help the left-hander’s bowhng fron there. Cromb was replaced at the north end by G. L. Talbot after ten overs, in which he got one wicket fo*20 runs.

Ninety minutes’ play saw 75 up for three wickets. Cavanagh reached double figures with a single off Gibbs, and shortly after scored his first four off G. L. Talbot.

G. I*. Talbot got Gale caught by Dorreen behind the stumps off the last ball of his second over.

Gale, who batted for 29 minutes, made 3, and J. Barron joined Cavanagh. 81 —4—3. A dull ten minutes followed, till Cavangh livened up a bit on reaching 20. He brought up the century at 22.58 with a single off R. O Talbot, the innings having then lasted an hour and 52 minutes.

Barron reached double figures after 20 minutes’ batting* a string of singles standing against his name. Cromb got his second wicket at 1.5. when he clean bowled Cavanagh. The Otago man had batted 65 minutes for his 31. D. Moloney joined Barron, the score being 113—5—31. Runs came up evenly till the luncheon adjournment at 1.15, when the score was 124 for five wickets.

Monk and Hawksworth began to brighten up, but Hawksworth was caught in slips by Roberts off Cromb for 7. G. Lenin replaced him. Lenin made only one before he played G. L. Talbot on. The Otago innings closed at 3.7 p.m. for 173. After Lunch.

On resuming after lunch, Burrows went on at the south end, and R. O. Talbot at the north. In his third over, Burrows clean bowled Barron for 23. . Barron batted for fifty-eight minutes and hit thirteen singles in his strike. Six for 127.

Runs were coming slowly, and most of them were singles, a four, when it appeared, being greeted with applause. J. A. Dunning carried on with Moloney.

Dunning was missed in the slips by Roberts before he had opened his ac-

count. Roberts was having some trouble wit hhis fingers from a hard hit which he stopped in the morning. Dunning survived an appeal for lbw from Burrows in his thirteenth over, but in his next over Burrows got the Otago man, who had scored t only a single in his seventeen minutes’ stay. The score w j as 143—7—1. P. Monk joined Moloney. Monk tipped the first ball he faced into the top of Dorreen’s pads, but as no one appealed, or appeared to take any interest in the event, Monk stayed on. Moloney was run out at 2.40 when his score was 23. He batted altogether for forty-five minutes. He hit one from Burrows, and called, but Gibbs fielded the ball smartly, and returned to Dorreen, who was too quick for the Otago man. 14g—8—23. J. Hawksworth replaced Moloney, and a moment afterwards a four and a single from Monk brought up 150. Scores: — OTAGO. First Innings. L. Giles, 211424111, lbw b R. O. Talbot 17 W.
