CRICKET.

MANY DEFECTIONS FROM THE CANTERBURY TEAM. Two of Canterbury’s best men will not be available for the Plunket Shield match with Otago to be played on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday next at Lancaster Park. They are M. L. Page and W. E. Merritt, who will be unable to represent the province. R. C. Burns, provincial wicketkeeper, will also be unable to play. Earlier, the side gave promise of being the strongest Canterbury has fielded this season, but, with these three defections, it will be far from the strongest. However, Otago have lost many of their best men, including R. C. Blunt and G. R. Dickinson, and the teams should be more even. It is understood that more of the Canterbury side will be unable to take the field, although there is nothing definite yet on the subject. C. G. Crawford, N. Dorreen and C. S. Gibbs have been selected to replace Page, Merritt and Burns. OTAGO AND NORTH OTAGO AT OAMARU. Per Press Association. OAMARU, February 26. The representative cricket match, Otago v.
