MANY DEFECTIONS FROM THE CANTERBURY TEAM. Two of Canterbury’s best men will not be available for the Plunket Shield match with Otago to be played on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday next at Lancaster Park. They are M. L. Page and W. E. Merritt, who will be unable to represent the province. R. C. Burns, provincial wicketkeeper, will also be unable to play. Earlier, the side gave promise of being the strongest Canterbury has fielded this season, but, with these three defections, it will be far from the strongest. However, Otago have lost many of their best men, including R. C. Blunt and G. R. Dickinson, and the teams should be more even. It is understood that more of the Canterbury side will be unable to take the field, although there is nothing definite yet on the subject. C. G. Crawford, N. Dorreen and C. S. Gibbs have been selected to replace Page, Merritt and Burns. OTAGO AND NORTH OTAGO AT OAMARU. Per Press Association. OAMARU, February 26. The representative cricket match, Otago v. North Otago, was concluded today, resulting in a draw in favour of the visitors. The weather was again ideal and the wicket and outfield were in good order. Otago replied with 355 to the home team’s first innings total of 276. Gale was the outstanding batsman. scoring 12S, chiefly by powerful drives all round the wicket. Priest 52. Cavanagh 31. Monk not out 34, were also in fine form with the bat. North Otago in their second strike made 195 for the loss of nine wickets. The visitors showed good form in all departments, and the addition of five players, four of whom are bowlers, who join the team to-morrow, the southerners should offer strong opposition to Canterbury in the Plunket Shield match, which
