When Leon Arthur Sowerby, aged twenty-five, married, was motorcycling at Blandford Park Speedway. Auckland, last night, he fractured lus leg through getting it caught between the rear wheel and the fork of the machine. This was the third time that Sowerby had been hurt at the park. The first time he gashed his leg, necessitating eight stitches, and on the next occasion he broke his collarbone after winning several events. « There is no foundation for the rumour which has been current for some time that certain American makes of steel shafts for golf clubs would not be recognised as legal by the Rules ot Golf Committee of the Royal and Ancient Club (says the “Star’s” London correspondent). An unofficial statement made to that effect had been construed by some golfers and professionals into an indication that a form of Protection was to be given to Britishmade clubs, but the authorities at St Andrews have no intentions of this character. J. H. Taylor, the ex-cham-pion, who controls a large club-making business at Richmond, stated that about three weeks ago he wired to the secretary of the Rules of Golf Com mittee asking if there was any truth in the report that a certai make of American steel-shaft would not be legal in this country. The reply stated that samples of the shaft had only just reached St Andrews, and had not been examined. A few days ago Taylor received a letter from the secretary of the Rules of Golf Committee stating that the shaft in question was approved by the committee. r
