SCOTS WHOM BRUCE HAS OFT MISLED.

(Special to the “Star.”) LONDON, December 31. “ Robert the Bruce was a feudal bully and the story of Bruce and the spider is an invention.” This was the bold declaration made by Mr Thomas Johnstone, Under secretary of State for Scotland. in an address on history at the annual congress of the educar tional institute of Scotland, at Greenock yesterday. Mr Johnstone pointed out that in the winter of 1306-7 Bruce was spending his time, not in semistarvation watching spiders in an island cave, but amid the rude comforts obtainable at the Court pf the Norwegian king. The old catalogue of more or less mythical dates of the births and goings and deaths of more or less v\seless people, said Mr Johnstone, w§ts an educational imposture.
