TIMARU NEWS.

BANKRUPT SHOWS SURPLUS. A surplus of £196 12s 8d was shown in the bankrupt estate of Clarenda Comyn, dressmaker, formerly of Christchurch, but now of Grampians Station, Fairlie, a meeting of whose creditors called for yesterday, lapsed for want of a quorum. The financial statement showed the amount owing to unsecured creditors as £63 7s lid, and that to secured creditors as £233 7s 4d. The estimated value of securities was £430 making a total surplus of £196 12s Sd. Stock in trade was shown at £lO, book debts estimated to produce £4, cash £2O, surplus from securities £196 12s Bd, total assets in all £227 2s Bd. POWER FAILURES EXPLAINED. The Borough Electrical Engineer (Mr A. E. A. Watkins) in his report to the Borough Council last evening, stated that the supply to the Grasmere Street substation had been somewhat erratic, failures having occurred on January 22 at 120 p.m. for one minute and power returned, but at a very low voltage until about 2.14 p.m. The total stoppages amounted to 25 minutes and the power was of very little use to consumers between 1.20 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. The cause of the stoppage was governor trouble at the Lake Coleridge power station and a faulty switch at the Hororata sub-station. On January 28 the power failed from 2.20 p.m. to 2.40 p.m. but the cause of the failure could not be obtained. Three failures of momentary duration occurred on January 20, 28 and 30. WEATHER IN JANUARY. According to the report of the curator, Mr D. N. Harper, to last flight’s meeting pf the Borough Council, the rainfall for January was 6.38 inches, 5 points less than the record for January -which was registered in 1919. Rain fell on nineteen days, the maximum fall being 2.15 inches on January 8. The total sunshine for January was 175.7 hours, averaging 5.6 hours per day. There were seven sunless days. A total of 218.6 hours was registered for January of last year. PROPOSED PADDLING POOL. The Borough Council at its meeting last evening endorsed the recommendation of the General Committee that the West End Association be supplied with seventy-five feet of twelve-inch pipes in connection with the work of forming a paddling pool, and that the paddling pool be connected with the water supply. The recommendation was the outcome of a deputation from the association. ANNUAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL. The Star Swimming Club has been granted permission by the Borough Council to hold its annual swimming carnival at the Century Bath on Saturday evening next. NEW SHED AT PARK. As the outcome of the representations of the South End Association, it was decided at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, on the recommendation of the General Committee, to call for tenders for the erection of a shed at the park. The drainage in connection with the shed has been referred to the estimates. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS. During the month of January, 11 new connections and 29 additions were carried out by the staff of the Municipal Electricity Department. The connected load for January was 55.072 k.m., and the total connected load 8,488.578 k.w. BUILDING ACTIVITY. Nine building permits of a total value of £2Bll were issued in Timaru during January. Three of the permits were for dwellings. TAKINGS AT SEA BATHS. The sum of £67 2s was collected at the hot sea-water baths at Caroline Bay from January 6to January 31. The amount was made up as follows, the figures for January 5 to January 31 last year being in parentheses: Massage £53 13s (£53 2s), baths £l3 9s (£l9 16s). METHODIST HARRIER CLUB. A Methodist Harrier Club has been formed in Timaru, with the following officers: Patron. Rev P. I. Cooke; president, Rev H. T. Peat; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Drennan, F. Matthews, L. Shortus, W. J. Roseveare. J. Simmons, R. J. M'Keown, H. W. Beaumont, R. Fenwick, E. Keay, J. Butcher, F. Metson. H. Butler, W. Harris and Ilocking; club captain, Mr R. Nelson, vice-cap-tain, Mr R. Lund; coach, Mr A. Foden; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Hurdley; club committee, Messrs N. Rose, R. Metson, W. M’Phedran, 11. Henry, F. Dale, W. Beswarick and officers ex offiicio. The club will be known as the Timarus Methodist Harrier Club, and its colours will be royal blue and white. ABATTOIR REVENUE. The revenue at the borough abattoir for January, when a total of 2176 animals was killed, was £193 9s 3d, as against £205 15s for January last year, when a total of 2283 animals was killed. MOTORIST INJURED. Mr F. F. Neale, “Kinnoul,” Waiiti Road, suffered a fracture of the left collar-bone and severe abrasions to his back as the result of his car capsizing on Sunday evening. He will be confined to his bed for a week. Mr Neale had stopped his car at the entrance to his drive, in order to open the gates. As he descended from the car, it began to run back. Mr Neale endeavoured to apply the hand-brake, but he was not quick enough, and the car capsized on the edge of the bank. Mr Neale was thrown clear, but he would probably have been seriously injured had not the progress of the car been checked by a tr'-.e which grows from the side of the bank. Mr Neale lay directly below the car, having struck a tree stump, which caused the collarbone injury. BRITISH CAR PREFERRED. The Timaru Borough Council by six votes to four decided last evening to purchase an English car at £320 in preference to a 65 per cent British one as recommended by the sub-committee consisting of Councillors Hart, Chittock and the omnibus engineer, appointed to go into the matter of purchasing a car for the electrical engineer. CHILDREN’S CONVENIENCES. At last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, Councillor T. W. Satterthwaite asked if it was the council’s intention to proceed with the erection of children’s conveniences at the Bay. He would like it to be treated as a matter of urgency. The Mayor: The only delay in the matter is that we are awaiting the confirmation of a telegram from the medical officer of health to proceed with the work and also the permission of the Harbour Board regarding drainage of the site. LICENSES TO BE ISSUED. The taxi licenses applied for by an outside taxi company are to be issued subject to the application being in order in accordance with the opinion of the borough solicitors. A resolution to this effect, moved by the Mayor and seconded by Councillor Todd was carried on the casting vote of the

Mayor at the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night. Discussion was taken in committee. PERSONAL. The Town Clerk, Mr E. A. Killick, is expected to resume duty to-day, after his annual holidays. Mr A. M. Taylor left yesterday to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Gas Institute, of which he is secretary. Councillor T. W. Satterthwaite. de-puty-Mayor was granted six months' leave of absence at last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council. Councillor Satterthwaite is the senior councillor, having seen twenty-one years’ service on the council. He leaves in March for a tour of the Old Country.
