Westoby, manager of the Canadian bowling team which recently visited Christchurch, wrote conveying the thanks of the members of the team for the hospitality shown to them during their visit. The Beckenham Club was granted permission to hold an all-day mid-week tournament on Thursday, February 27. The secretary of the Dunedin Centre wrote suggesting Friday, February 28, as the date for the playing of the

Redpath Shield match between Canterbury and Otagd, at Dunedin, Mr Oakey said he thought that Friday was a bad day. on which to play the match. In previous years the match had usually been played on a Thursday and in his opinion that was a more suitable day than Friday. With the champion of champions competitions coming on it was desirable that the players should be able to get back to their greens for the Saturday following the match. The secretary said that he had suggested Thursday, March 6, as a suitable date. The matter was left to the Match Committee to make the best arrangements possible. A letter was received from Mr R. W. M’Kinley, a former member of the Linwood Club, with reference to the action taken by the committee of the club in connection with an incident that occurred on the club’s green on January 4, as a result of which he was compelled to tender his resignation. Before the letter was read, it was decided to deal with the matter in committee, and on resuming in open meeting no report was made by the chairman. The Officer-ir.-Charge of the Christchurch office of the Valuation Department wrote drawing attention to Section 52 of the Valuation of Land Act, 1925, as follows: " Where land is owned or occupied by, or in trust for any society or association of persons, whether corporate or incorporate, and used for games or sports other than horse racing or trotting, and such land is not used for the private pecuniary profit of any individual or individuals, the Valuer-General shall make reduction in the assessment of the capital and unimproved value of such land, and of the several interests therein to the extent by which in his opinion such value is reduced by reason of the limited and restricted purposes to which such land is applied.” The letter asked that the matter be brought before the notice of clubs affiliated to the Centre, to enable any club which has not availed itself of this section of the Act to make application forthwith. This wohld enable the rolls to be amended in time for next year’s rating The chairman said that the St Albans Club had taken advantage of the section of the Act and as a result the capital value of its property had been reduced. The letter was referred to the affiliated clubs. The South Canterbury Centre wrote suggesting that owing to the poor patronage by local bowlers at the smoke concert held on the occasion of the recent Steans Cup match at Timaru, a dinner be held in the evening in future. The suggestion was noted for consideration when the next Steans Cup match is held. ™° n ™ ehalf of the Match Committee Mr Efforcl reported that the pennaSu competition was now finished, and although the final percentages were' not yet worked out, it appeared that it had been won by the United Club. (Applause.) A noteworthy feature of the competition this season was that there were no postponements due to bad weather. He also drew attention to the fact that entries for the champion of champions pairs competition would close on Friday next.

Mr Good reported that he had attended the half-yearly meeting of the Dominion Bowling Council at Dunedin when the question of the revision of the rules was discussed. The suggestions from the Christchurch Centre were adopted and would come up for consideration at the annual meeting in Auckland in July. Among the matters to be considered were the date of the Dominion tournament, the effect of local tournaments on the programme of the Dominion tournament, and general items. The chairman reported on the visit of the Canadian bowlers, and on the Barnett Tiki match played in Christchurch against the Wellington Centre. Mr Burson brought up the question of improving the state of the greens. He suggested that a small committee should be set up, with power to obtain outside expert advice on the best means of improving the greens.

Mr Oakey supported Mr Burson’s remarks. He said he thought that it was time serious consideration was given to the question of improving the greens.

After further discussion it was de--3 cided to defer setting up the committee s until the next, meeting. 1 On the motion of Mr Piper it was decided to send a letter of thanks to the . president of the Dominion Council foi f the kindness shown to the players from - Christchurch who took part in tlie rei cent Dominion tournament.

VETERANS’ MATCH.

A suggestion that an annual veterans’ * bowling match be inaugurated in Christ- ™ church for players of seventy years of age or over was made to last night’s _ meeting of the Christchurch Bowling - Centre by the Edgeware Club. The centre decided to carry out the suggestion, and the question of making arrangements for the match was referred to the executive and the Match Com- , mittee. -s in conveying the suggestion to the centre, Mr J. B. Borthwick, secretary of ts the Edgeware Club, said that his club would place its green at the disposal of the centre for this season’s game on

any other day than a Saturday, and the members of the club were prepared to act as hosts on the occasion of the first game. s’ The chairman (Mr D. E. Wood) said t- that the idea had been taken up by the ,f Otago Centre, and the annual veterans’ ’s match was a very popular fixture, g “ A very good suggestion,” said Mr ie W. Raphael. s- Mr J. Brackenridge said he was in r- Wellington on the occasion of the sd veterans’ match last week and it was i- most successful. On the motion of Mr H. Burson it was ie decided to approve of the suggestion >f and to thank the Edgeware Club for its ,b offer to act as hosts. >f The executive and the Match Comn mittee were appointed to act as hosts.
