MEETING OF SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL HELD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson), Councillors F. C. Cooper, A. Holden, E. F. Sandford, D. F. Oldridge, F. H. R. Neville, J. E. Tait, C. I. Denham, H. W. Harris. The engineer’s report for a period ended February 7 stated that the ruts in the Taylor’s Mistake Road had been filled in and loose metal on the Scarborough Road had been graded from the sides to the centre. The boat slip at Scarborough had been inspected and it was found that about fourteen piles required replacement. Some of the decking would require renewing and other parts overhauling. Sufficient material was in hand for piles, but other material would have to be found. The report stated that the tins dumped at the mouth of the culvert in Estuary Road were not dumped there by council employees, but by private ! persons. There was a notice erected

prohibiting the dumping of rubbish there, but no attention was paid to it, and it was removed without authority. Regarding the covering, this was attended to whenever possible. The report also contained a special clause with reference to the outfall drain, which runs through private property and has its outlet near Scarborough. It stated that at the present time there was a considerable amount of growth along that portion of the creek bed which is unconcreted. This was the cause of the backing up of the water, and to clean this out once or twice a year would in time become a nuisance, owing to the creek becoming deeper, with a consequent loss of grade, and the water would then become stagnant. The cost of concreting this creek would be a hardship to the owners. It was therefore suggested that the various owners should cut off the growth as closely as possible, and then rake out any obstruction. This would overcome the trouble. The Mayor, referring to gas matters, stated that arrangements had been made to reduce the cost of gas to consumers by lOd per 1000 cubic feet as from the first of April.
