RACING NOTES.

Nominations for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting will close at six o’clock to-morrow evening. # * * * The first batch of the Riccarton horses engaged at the Dunedin meeting left for Wingatui last night. Another lot went to-day and the remainder will go south to-morrow. * He He He With a number of trainers absent at the Dunedin meeting, there will not be much stir on the Riccarton tracks during the next few days. Things will liven up again next week, when the Canterbury Jockey Club will hold its summer meeting. ❖ H« He * T. H. Gillett has recommissioned the King John gelding, Magna Charta, who has been spelling for about six months. He made his last appearance in a race in June, running in good style over hurdles, at the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting. Hi He He * Yoma is in good form at present, and he will be hard to beat in the Waganui Cup. Jft He * The Paladin gelding Knightlike has been sold by Mr A. B. Williams, through the agency of Mr T. S. Roulston, and he will be sent to Australia.

Perennis, who beat the maiden field at New Plymouth on Thursday, is bred to go fast, being by Chief Ruler from Gladiole, a St Clements mare, who was a good sprinter.

The Auckland two-vear-old, Hard Words, has not had much rest during the last few weeks. He had two races at Trentham and two at Takapuna, winding up with two more at New Plymouth last week. His form has been very consistent, his record being three wins and two seconds and a third.

The Waikato trainer, A. Tinker, has just taken over a two-year-old by Top Gallant from Conceit, purchased by Mr H. Rothery at the yearling sales in Sydney last Easter. This youngster was broken in and gelded and then turned out for a spell.

Hampton Park, who was one of the disappointments of the Takapuna meeting, was pricked by the farrier when being plated. He was lame after the race, and the mishap, no doubt, accounted in some measure for his indifferent display.

Glendowie was a competitor in jumping vents at a northern show recently, carrying off five prizes. The Great Northern winner of two years ago, who has been operated on for wind troubles, apparently satisfactorily, may be trained again this •winter. * t * He 4« Roy Reed will ride Count Cavour in the Dunedin Cup and Royal Saxon in the Publicans’ Handicap, while he will be on Nightmarch in the James Hazlett Gold Cup on Saturday. Hs He He s|e Many of those who saw Silvermine just beaten by Paganelli at New Plymouth on Thursday agreed that the Hawera sprinter was unlucky. Paganelli drew the rails, and held them all the way, a decided advantage on this course. Silvermine had to wait for an opening behind Paganelli and would have won in another stride. This was no disgrace to Paganelli, who was conceding 191 bto a solid galloper. Silvermine was not handicapped for to-day’s sprint at New Plymouth, but will contest next the Flying Handicap at Wanganui, which was framed on similar lines to that of Thursday’s event. Silvermine should start a good favourite, and what beats him will win.

Without detracting from the merit of The Hawk’s Cup victory at New Plymouth, says a northern w’riter, it must be said that Vertigern was a most unlucky runner. As at Trentham he struck trouble during the running, but at New Plymouth he was hampered at a vital stage, just approaching the short straight. He put in great work over the last furlong, but was not quite good enough. This gelding has been most unfortunate in his last three races, but should soon make amends. Unfortunately for his connections he is climbing up again in the handicaps without winning.

When Nightmarch raced so u'ell in Australia in the spring he was ridden by the North Island jockey R. Reed, w T ho is expected to make another trip to Sydney to pilot the Nightraid horse in his autumn campaign. * * * * The yearlings purchased by Australian buyers at the National Sales at Trentham last month have been shipped to Sydney. * * * * Te Ilora, who was runner-up in the concluding event at New Plymouth on Thursday, is half-brother to that really good galloper Te Kara, whom he resembles a little. He is returned as by Paper Money or Lucullus, but his appearance suggests Lucullus rather than Paper Money. He is a big gelding and a long-striding fellow who should be seen to advantage on courses where he has plenty of room. He carries the Te Kara colours, and his name might easily become as well-known as that of his half-brother.

Red Fuschia’s presence in the Mimi Highweight Handicap was evidently looked on by the multitude at New Plymouth as rather hopeless, and only part of his preparation for jumping races. On the contrary, he showed plenty of dash and was up with the leaders at the turn. From that point on he was the winner, and stalled off Reed’s desperate effort on The Swell. Red Fuschia has shown brilliant form over hurdles as his record shows, and with Mister Gamp, promises to keep Awapuni well in the limelight when the jumping season comes along.

Nominations for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting are due at six o'clock to-morrow evening. * * H« H« Acceptances for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting close at eight o’clock on Wednesday night. * * * * Admiral Bingen gave further evidence of his brilliancy by winning the Spreydon Handicap easily. The speed was on all the time, but F. G. Holmes got a good position and did not send him along till just before the straight was reached. From then on, there was only one horse in the race. Admiral Bingen won a two-mile race at Timaru, but he is best, in the meantime, over a mile and a half. He should win more races, as he is only a five-year-old and has not done a great deal of racing. He * * * Nelson Ata went a good deal better in the Spreydon Handicap than he did in his race at Forbury Park. Had he trotted as well in the south the previous week, he would have won. Nelson Ata went away well and never made a mistake throughout the journey. It was easily his best performance over the distance.

* * * He Erin’s Pointer, who won the Juvenile Handicap, was bred by Mr J. Farrell, and is by Travis Axworthy from Erin’s Logan, a mare who was verj r smart during her racing career and a good free-legged pacer. Erin’s Pointer, like most of Travis Axworthy’s stock, goes with a very easy action and covers the ground at a much faster rate than others who have more attractive gaits. She saw out the distance well, and should furnish into a high grade pacer. * He He * Silverwood, who was second to Erin’s Pointer in the Juvenile Handicap, has been racing consistently of late without success. She was too far back coming into the straight to have any chance of catching the leader. Harold Thorpe’s great, stamina gave him the victory in the Midsummer Handicap. He was well placed early in the race, but going down the back the last time he seemed to lose his position. Once he hit the straight he came very fast and won brilliantly. Since he has been leased by Mr Husband, Harold Thorpe has won two races, as he was successful on the second day of the Canterbury Park Club’s meeting last month. Harold Thorpe is by Our Thorpe from Play Soon, and he was bred in Southland by Messrs Stevenson and M’Math. He was for some time raced by M. B, Edwards, but some months ago he went into Mr Husband’s charge. His late trainer, however, drove Harold Thorpe to victory. * * * *

Jean M’Elwyn seems destined to be continuously beaten. She went a very fine race in the Midsummer Handicap, and put in a great run up the straight. She could not withstand the challenge of Harold Thorpe, however, and another placed performance went down to her already long list.

Omaha has been racing in all classes of races over short and long distances, and in all has shows great consistency. In winning the Papanui Handicap, however, he put up his best performance to date. Omaha is by Harold Dillon from Franzalena, and although he has done a good deal of racing he seems quite sound and is still improving. He has now qualified for Cup class.

Great Logan is coming back to his best form. He won over a mile and a quarter at Forbury Park and finished second' to Omaha in the Papanui Handicap. Great Logan was expected to take high honours on the race track when he started racing, but he has hardly lived up to expectations. Lately, however, he has made a decided improvement, and he may be marked as a likely winner in the near future.

Ukulele Lady gave further evidence of being a solid and reliable trotter by leading throughout in the Cashmere Handicap and winning easily. She is a quick beginner and a capital stayer. She came from Australia some time ago and is by the New Zealand bred sire Adonis, who is now at the stud in the Commonwealth. Very few of Adonis’s progeny go at the trotting gait.

Lady Fan, who finished second to Ukulele Lady in the Cashmere Handicap, made a very bad beginning and failed to settle down for nearly a furlong. Once she got into her gait she showed plenty of speed. He * * Sfc

Royal Silk, who has raced well since being put into work, was sold by his breeder some months ago and went into C. S. Donald’s stable. He scored his first win for his new owner in the Champion Three-Year-Old Handicap. He is by Silk Thread from Glimpse, and was bred by S. J. Thomas, who raced him until he was sold. Like his sire, Royal Silk looks like being a high class pacer over two miles and he is one of the best of the three-year-olds this season. * H? * He Ngingo Ngingo had to put up with another placed performance in a three-year-old event. The Matchlight pacer made a good start and had everything in his favour in the race. He made no impression on the leader at the finish, but with the pace solid all the way he was set a hard task. * * * * John Jinks, though only third in the Champion Handicap, registered a great performance, the fastest ever put up by a three-year-old in the Dominion. But for bad luck at the start he would have made matters much more interesting.

Rolex scored his first success when he won the Liverpool Handicap. It is not often that a pacer goes 4min 32 2-ssec when he wins his first race. Rolex is by Great Audubon, and he has raced consistently of late. He finished second to Cyone at Timaru, and as he has been gradually improving and working well in training, his victory was not altogether unexpected. He gave E. C. M’Dermott his second win of the day.

Cyone was somewhat unlucky in the Liverpool Handicap. With a round to go, she was on the rails, with several others round her, and she had to lose ground to get clear. This handicap probably cost her the race, as she had to go hard along the back stretch to get to the leaders, and she was without her customary dash at the end. is a five-year-old mare and has been gradually improving all the season. She stays well, so that she may reach the best class in the near future.

King Pointer won the Craven Handicap like a good horse. He contracted strangles prior to the New Zealand Cup and was unabla to start in the big November handicap. He was laid aside and has not been long in work. At the end of last month he failed to go away right at the Wellington meeting, and at the recent Forbury Park meeting he paced indifferently, going into a break more than once. Although he improved somewhat on the second day, his gait was not good. He was started twice at Addington on Saturday. In the Midsummer Handicap he showed his first glimpse, of form since being last put into work, finishing fifth. The race evidently did him a lot of good, as in his later effort he paced soundly throughout.

Talent had every chance in the Craven Handicap, in which he finished second to King Pointer. He was quickly away and led into the straight. On the last day of the Forbury Park meeting Great Logan, driven by O. E. Hooper, just beat Talent in a fine finish, and on Saturday the New Brighton-trained pacer was again defeated over the same distance by a pacer trained and driven by Hooper. * * He He Kingcraft was a pronounced favourite for the Craven Handicap, but his backers got a poor run. He went off slowly, and though he was going on at the end to finish fifth, he never looked like being in the money.

METHVEN TROTTING CLUB

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The committee of the Methven Trotting Club met on Friday evening; present—Messrs T. S. Harrison (chairman), James Campbell, F. S. M'Donald, R. D. Millar, A. J. Wilson, W. J. Bennett, J. Dowling, 11. Green, S. G. Holmes, T. Maguire, J. H. M’Kendry, J. M’Cloy and C. Nordquist. The secretary, Westport Trotting Club, wrote thanking the Methven club for their donation towards the cast of repairing the damage caused b/ the earthquake. The resignation of Mr A. C. Shaw, Ashburton, owing to his removal from the district, was received with regret. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that the club’s claim for a refund of totalisator tax had been granted, and the sum of £173 6s 3d had been paid to the club’s credit at the Bank of New Zealand, Methven. Accounts amounting to £203 6s were passed for payment. Mr Harrison reported on behalf of the Track Sub-committee on the work done to the racing track. The cost of the work done to date was £BB 6s lid, and for this sum the track had been put in splendid order. The season had been against them. First of all, heavy rain and floods and heavy winds had undone a portion of their work and made the cost much greater. There was still some top-dressing to be done and other small items attended to. Mr Harrison also mentioned that Mr Holmes and himself had done some work gratia, which had kept the costs down.

Mr J. H. M’Kendry moved a vote of thanks to the committee responsible. The track was greatly improved, and by the time the next meeting came round it would be in perfect order. The motion was seconded by Mr C. Nordquist, and carried unanimously. _ The sub-committee was authorised to carry out further improvements, and also to purchase a heavy roller. The question of additional stand accommodation was discussed, and the Grounds Sub-committee was instructed to obtain plans and prices for an open stand similar to that used at Ashburton Racecourse. It was decided to call tenders for grazing rights for the racecourse for sheep only, the track not to be included. Air J. Drummond was elected a member of the club. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr R. F. Rewai (honorary auditor) owing to family bereavement. A vote of sympathy was also passed to the relatives of the late Mr John Stewart.

WANGANUI NOTES.

(Special to the “Star.”) WANGANUI, February 8. A subscription was due on Friday night for the Jackson Stakes, to be run at Wanganui on Saturday. Paiko has dropped out, leaving Paganelli, Tenterden, Lady Quex, C'imabue, Chrysology, Hunting Cry, Jenny Diver, Arisus, Monalof and a couple of unnamed ones The only visiting horse which has arrived is Abbey Queen. She looks in tine order, but has done no galloping here. She needs little work. Star Area has dropped out of the Stewards' Handicap, but there does not appear to be much wrong with him. He ran five furlongs this morning by himself, wide out, in lmin 5 2-ssec, and

pulled up all right. He will probably run in the big race on the second day. Fernden will not run until the second day. He is looking and going well. He was given a good working gallop on the plough this morning. Arisus and Tres Opie went half a mile together, the latter finishing in front in 52 3-ssec. Tres Opie ie engaged in the Maide» Stakes. Arisus was not bustled over the last quarter. Auctioneer went six furlongs by himself in lmin 19sec, without being extended. Zarene shaped very nicely in running five furlongs, without being asked to make time. She is in good fettle. Whenuatonga was schooled over hurdles, jumping cleanly and very fast. He will be a runner in the hurdle races at the Rangitikei meeting next month. L. G. Morris has booked accommodation for a team of seven horses, consisting of Cashier, Cadland, Thrift, Equitant, Ruanui, Consent and Freehold. With such a team the new mentor at Fordell should pick up a race or two. Cashier is reported to be galloping well, and his prospects in the Wanganui Cup are fancied in some quarters. Cadland is also doing good work, while Freehold has been sprinting in fine style.

PAGANELLI SCORES IN TARANAKI STAKES

CORINAX SURPRISES IN PAUL MEMORIAL.

(Special to the “ Star.”) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 8. The Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting was concluded to-day in fine, warm weather, before an excellent attendance. A good deal of interest was centred on the Taranaki Stakes, in which Paganelli scored a clear cut victory. An inquiry into the accident on the first day resulted in a finding that the mishap was due simply to mischance, with no blame attachable. In the Okoke Hack Hurdles Democratic and Borsalene were the favourites, with Whenuanui again returning a good price. Borsalene lost her rider at the first fence and Whenuanui and Joke Form led down the straight from Whisogne, Air Force and Democratic, with the riderless Borsalene in amongst them. Whisogne went up to Whenuanui temporarily at the six furlong post, but Whenuanui went away at the half mile from Jen and Whisogne, with Democratic coming fast. Democratic went in pursuit of Whenuanui racing to the last fence, but Whenuanui had too much advantage and beat Democratic easily by three lengths. Jen was five lengths back third, with Panorama fourth. Joke Form was fifth and Copey and Air Force were next. Whenuanui again was able to slip his field and Democratic’s effort was too belated. Jen ran a fair race and Panorama again finished well. Borsalene raced with her field without a rider and actually finished second. In the Mokau Flack Flandicap Grecian was a solid favourite, with a good deal of support for The Warden. Mount Shannon, Remora and Grecian on the rails led out of the straight and at the six furlongs post Mount Shannon and Remora showed the way to The W’arden, Grecian, Monoie and Joy Spear, with Joy Spear going up fast. Joy Spear was in charge with The Warden racing past the half mile. Then came Grecian and Calamine, with Latakia and Singer next. Latakia went up to Joy Spear racing for the straight, with The Warden going back. Joy Spear ran wide at the turn and carried out Latakia, while Grecian came through on the rails. Grecian went on and won easily by two lengths from Latakia, who beat Joy Spear by four lengths. Calamine, The Warden and Green Acre were next. Grecian had a great run and Latakia was not too lucky in the early part. Both Joy Spear and The Warden are improvers, especially The Warden, who will not be neglected at Wanganui next week. In the Stewards’ Handicap Ridgemount was backed down to a shade oi odds on, with Leitrim carrying solid support. Ridgemount began smartest from Leitrim and Llanore. Leitrim went up and joined Ridgemount at the half mile, with Llanore and Bonogne on terms about a length away. Ridgemount still had the advantage of Leitrim at the turn, where they swung a trifle -wide, giving Llanore, on the rails, her chance, but she was not good enough. Gray rode Leitrim out over the last furlong, but Ridgemount was still half a length to the good at the post, with Llanore four lengths away and two lengths in front of Bonogne. Ridgemount set an easy pace early and he was too brilliant for Leitrim in the run home. Llanore and Bonogne were never dangerous. The Taranaki Stakes saw Paganelli backed down to odds on, with Cimabue second choice. Lady Quex and Toxeuma began best, but Paganelli soon took the lead with Lady Quex, racing down the back clear of Cimabue and Toxeuma, , with Eaglet two lengths away. They raced right round to the turn in that order, where Paganelli had drawn clear of Lady Quex, and both Toxeuma and Cimabue were hot in pursuit. Paganelli came home in good style to win by two lengths from Toxeuma, who beat Cimabue by half a length. Eaglet was half a length away fourth, and Lady Quex three lengths away. Paganelli was soon up with Lady Quex and he held her comfortably, although the first three furlongs took 35£sec, and the half mile 46 3-ssec. Fie left her with no effort . as they straightened up for home, and, although he had to be kicked up to win, he had a good margin. The surprise of the race was the good effort by Toxeuma on a course that did not suit him. Fie bored in on the turn and incidentally prejudiced the chances of Cimabue, who probably Would have been second with a clear run home. Eaglet finished on very well. Lady Quex was well beaten, and was not knocked about over the last furlong. In the Paul Memorial Handicap, Vertigern was a very hot favourite, with Taneriri also in great demand, but the winner turned up in Corinax, at a very satisfactory price. Pegaway, Lucy Rose, Taneriri and Corinax led into the straight. At the stands Lucy Rose was showing the way to Corinax and Vertigern, with Taneriri, Pegaway, Orazone, Manly and Yoma following. Mister Gamp moved up at the six furlong post, and at the five furlong post Corinax went into the lead from Lucy Rose and Vertigern. Then came Pegaway, Taneriri, Mister Gamp and Yoma. Corinax turned for home just ahead of Vertigern, Pegaway, Taneriri and Yoma. Corinax finished on well to win by half a length from Pegaway, who beat Vertigern in the run home by two lengths. Orazone was fourth, and then came Taneriri, Lucy Rose, Manly and Yoma. Corinax registered a first-class performance, and Pegaway did better. With the pace on all the way, Vertigern had every chance. Taneriri and Orazone were a trifle unlucky. Yoma did well to the turn, and will improve. In the Urenui hack race Treasury was a good favourite, with Royal Visitor and I’m Alone next best backed in a race on which the betting took a limited range. Treasury began very smartly and showed the way round to the turn from I’m Alone, with Wild Country'. Animated. Annoyer, Bon Eve and Tareka next. They raced in that order into the straight. At the finish two lengths separated Treasury and I’m Alone, both of whom were hard ridden. Then five lengths away" came Animated, Wild Country, Annoyer and Royal Visitor, with little between them. Treasury was hard ridden to score, and I’m Alone was well away from the field. Wild Country and Royal Visitor shaped like improvers. Tn the Paritutu Juvenile Handicap Blue Paper was a very hot favourite, with Hard Words, Belle Star and Green Linnet getting a good measure of support. Hard Words began best from Quinola, Belle Star, Blue Paper and Green Linnet. Blue Paper went up fast and raced with Hard Words to the turn from Quinola and Belle Star, with Green Linnet next. A great race home saw Hard Words win by a bare half length from Green Linnet, who finished fast to beat Belle Star by a head. Quinola was right up fourth, and then came Blue Paper and Rose Lupin. Hard Words, from a decent barrier position for once, just won. If Green Linnet had jumped out smartly she might have troubled him. Belle Star just weakened at the finish. Half-way down the straight he looked likely. Blue Paper showed great pace for half a mile. Quinola is an improver. In the Omata Hack Handicap Te Hoia and Joy Germ were both very

solidly backed. Joy Germ began best from Te Hoia and Lady Lucerne, with Peg Black slow away. Joy Germ was out clear from Perennis, Te Iloia and Lady Lucerne at the half-mile, with Latakia and Peg Black moving up. Joy Germ was three lengths clear of Perennis, Latakia and Te Hoia as they turned for home, Te Hoia stumbling and almost falling as they came into the straight. Joy Germ went on and won easily by four lengths from Perennis, who beat Latakia by four lengths. Te Hoia and Tent Call were next. Joy Germ won easily, and Te Hoia would have been at best only second. Perennis ran a fair race.
