APRICOTS AND PEACHES ARE VERY CHEAP NOW.

Mutton is being retailed at lower values in some quarters, by up to Id per lb. It is stated that from the public point of view mutton is now good buying. Beef and lamb prices remain the same. Lamb has reached almost a standard price, in view of the freezing works being in full operation, and there is not much likelihood of a change for some time. Prices quoted are as follows:—Mutton: Flaps 2*d per lb, forequarters from 4id, shoulders from 6d, legs from 7id, chops from 4d. Lamb: Large forequarters Bd, medium forequarters from 9d, large sides 9id, large hinds lOd. Beef: Flanks 4d per lb, brisket sd, skirt steak 7d, beef steak from 7d, prime ribs from 7d, prime sirloin from 9d. Stone Trait Plentiful. Stone fruit is fairly plentiful, and jam-makers are advised to buy early, as the season will be a short one and prices are as cheap now as they will ever be. Apricots are very cheap at 4d per lb, or 6s 6d a case, and peaches at from 4d to 6d per lb, or from 6s 8d to 7s 6d a case. Dessert apricots and peaches are worth about 8d per lb. Nectarines, which are not in heavy supply, are being retailed at from 6d to Is per lb. Blue diamond plums are 31b for Is, and Burbanks 31b for Is 3d. New season’s Graverstein apples are priced at 31b for Is 3d. Sunkist oranges sell at four and three for Is, and Australian valencias at five for Is. Bananas are plentiful at from eight to five for Is. The last of the cherries are changing hands at from Is 6d to 2s per lb. Grapes bring from 2s to 2s 6d per lb, and grapefruit Is 3d for three. A few passion fruit are on offer at five for Is, and pineapples are scarce at about 3s each. The first of the Bon Cretian pears are being retailed at 31b for Is 3d for good dessert quality. Tomatoes have eased in price and are now from 8d to Is per lb. Cucumbers are fairly plentiful at 4d and 6d each, and hothouse-grown at Is per lb. New season’s marrows, which look very well, cost from 8d to Is each, cabbages 3d and 4d each, and cauliflowers from 8d to Is 3d each. Root vegetables can be had at 2d a bunch. Beans, French and runner, are priced at 8d per lb, and green peas at 6d per lb. Rhubarb is fairly plentiful at 4d a bundle. Sola* are Plentiful. Most popular varieties of fish are in fairly good supply, especially soles. Terakihi is somewhat scarce. Prices per lb are as follows:—Groper lOd and Is, ling 6d, moki 8d and Is, kingfish 9d, blue cod Is, cod 6d and 9d, gurnet 6d and lOd, soles Bd, large flounders lOd, yellow flounders Is. Supplies of eggs are becoming more scarce, though they are still equal to all demands. There is a possibility of a rise in price this week. Last week’s retail prices were Is 6d a dozen for first grade and Is 4d for second grade.
