Racing and Trotting.

(BY

RACING NOTES. 'The yearling sales will occupy attention at Trentham to-day. There will be a large attendance, among the visitors to Wellington being a number of owners and trainers without horses racing, the sales being the attraction. * * * # Master Clarence bruised a foot while doing a gallop at Trentham, and he had to forfeit his engagement in the Mungaroa High-Weight Handicap. It was bad luck, as he looked like being dangerous again. _ * * sis * King’s Jest won the Mungaroa HighWeight Handicap very easily. He joined the front division at the home turn and had the race in safe keeping from the time the straight was reached. It was a great reversal on the first day’s form, but with four times as much money invested on him, it was freely anticipated. He is a brother to Anomalv, and a half-brother to Shirley, and in this class he is pretty good. * * * Marsham was running on at the end of a mile in the Trentham Iligh-Weight Handicap, and the longer journey yesterday was all in his favour. He finished well in second place, and he looks now as if he might reward F. D. Jones for the patience he has displayed. * * * Mister Gamp was backed very confidently in the Mungaroa High-Weight Handicap. As usual he began slowly, and though he finished well, he was giving away too much start to have a winning chance. Pangolin jumped out smartly in the Mungaroa Iligh-Weight Handicap, but he was in trouble when half the journey had been covered. -fi H< * * Waterline, who won the Trial Plate, is a novice from Sir George Clifford’s team. lie is a well-grown three-year-old by The Ace from Sailor's Hope, the dam of Quarterdeck. This was his first race, and he put up an exceptionally good performance. lie was one of the last to leave the mark, but he ran round the field on the outside at the home turn and won decisively. lie looks as if he would stay, and he should soon get some more money. m * * * Jaloux was backed in the Trial Plate as if defeat was out of the question. He jumped out slowly and still was a long way back at the entrance. From there he put in a good run, but he had no chance of overhauling Waterline, though be beat all the others, Jaloux is piling up an unenviable list of placed performances, but he should break the spell very soon. sS * * * Gay Crest, a member of F. D. Jones’s team, ran his best race when he filled third place in the Trial Plate. He stuck to his task gamely, and he looks a good sort to follow now. •Jfi * sjs Dancing Star, an Australian-bred mare by Great Star, showed a fine burst of speed in the Trial Plate, and she looks certain to be pay her way later in the season. He * * He Great Charter registered an attractive performance when he won the January Handicap. lie was always handy to the leaders, aod he stayed out the mile in impressive style. He is a five-year-old by King John from En Parole, and sister to Bobrikoff, but he has done comparatively little racing. H: # * "hs The veteran Martian gelding. The Hawk, ran another sound race in the January Handicap. After being one of the earlj'’ leaders he dropped back in the middle stages, but he came home with a great finishing run.

Tcheka was responsible for a good performance in the January Handicap. He was not far behind the placed horses, and was travelling very fast at the end. * * * * Night Lad ran another bad race in he January Handicap. He began slowly, and though he moved up at the home turn it was a short-lived effort. * * * * Green Linnet’s win in the Nursery Handicap showed her up as a brilliant two-vear-old, with more than the average share of stamina. She is inclined to be fractious at the barrier, but on this occasion she jumped out well and she had the race in safe keeping a furlong from home. Her sire. Tonbridge, is bred on staying lines, while her dam, Ladv Egletine, by Paper Money from Songbird's imported dam, introduces plenty of speed. Green Linnet will do still better.

“ ARGUS.”)

Full Feather was well backed in the January Handicap, but. he never had a decent chance. lie drew the inside position at the start and his inability to begin smartly settled his chance, tie put in a good run on the outside at the h onie turn, but had to go over too much ground. * * * H* Awaken gave further evidence of good class by carrying a big weight into second place in the Nursery Handicap. She is one of the best of the two-year-olds. and she looks like making a brilliant sprinter next season. * * * * Limerick's two-year-old brother, Dunraven, showed plenty of speed in the Nursery Handicap. He was one of the leaders all the way, and his admirers were hopeful when he was in front, just over a furlong from the post, that he would come on for his first win. The finishing run was not there, however, and he had to put up with fifth place. He will win races later on, but he is a long way below top class at present.

Bright Glow seemed to have hard luck in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap in meeting Concentrate only two pounds better than in the Wellington Cup. „ The furlong shorter journey was all in her favour, however. and after being neay the front all the way, she finished very strongly to score a good win. She is so well at present that further successes may be expected shortly, a mile and a quarter being about her best distance. * * *• * Pride very nearly brought off a surprise in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. She moved up to the leaders half a mile from home, and she had Bright Glow doing her best to win. Pride’s performance was all the more creditable as she earned second money in spite of a lot of bad luck. She looks a good prospect for a big stake in the autumn. He He * * Latin Quarter and Concentrate met with serious trouble after going about' three furlongs in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Concentrate never recovered, but Latin Quarter came on with a fine run in the straight to gather in third money. With better luck he might have won. ❖ He * He Star Stranger was well placed in the early part of the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. Then he lost his position, and though he finished well he never looked like a winner. He * * # , Amor was one of the unlucky horses in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap. He seemed to meet trouble more than once, and he was not prominent in the concluding stages. * * * * Rational 11. was responsible for a fine performance in winning the Douro Cup. He was one of the leaders all the way, and he finished on _ very gamely under pressure. He is an Australian-bred four-year-old by Rossendale. Already he has won several races, but he looks as if he would improve a lot, and next season he should be capable of playing his part well in important open events over long journeys. Sfc He * Great Star had every chance, in the Metropolitan Handicap, as he was out in front from the start, but he was well beaten when half a mile had been covered. * * * * Pahu's performance in third place in the Douro Cup was full of merit. He was a long way back in the early stages, and still had a lot of ground to make up when the straight was reached. It was a smart effort and he showed he may be among the early winners. * * * Grecian, a three-vear-old by Lord Quex, ran a good race in the Douro Cup, being in the picture all the way. He is a smart galloper worth keeping in mind the next time he starts. * & * * Limosin showed plenty of speed in the Douro Cup, but a mile seems to be too far for him. He He H< He Head Serang and Disorder let their admirers down badly in the Douro Cup. They were a trifle slow out of the barrier, and in the big field they never I were able to get out of the bunch.

The Riccarton mare, Te Awhina, ran a very solid race in the Douro Cup. She was never further back than fourth, and she battled on gamely to get second money. Apart from her speed she stays out a mile well, and she should win very soon. * * * * The Waikato mare, Mervette, registered an attractive performance when she won the Metropolitan Handicap. She began slowly, but after giving the leaders a good start over the last three furlongs, she cut them down in brilliant style. Mervette is by Lucullus from Bravton, so she is a half-sister to Tarleton and Historic, but apparently she is only a sprinter, though a good class one. He H= H« * Cimabue did not jump out well in the Metropolitan Handicap, but he was staying on in fine style to get second J money. * He He He Aspiring showed brilliant speed in the Metropolitan Handicap, and she looked a winner up to five furlongs. Over the last bit she tired, and she finished up third. She is capable of better, as she was off colour yesterday, and she may win a good sprint handicap before long. * * He H« Dutch Money put up a fine perform ance in winning the Camp Handicap. She was not one of the quickest out of the barrier, but she soon crossed over to the inside, and, after being well placed on reaching the course proper, she stayed on in her best style. It was quite a stylish effort, as there were some smart hacks in the field, and she was giving weight to all her opponents. * * * He The Auckland hack, Havaspot, put up another good performance when he ran second in the Camp Handicap. He is not a brilliant beginner, but when he settles down he can turn on a great burst of speed over the final stages of a race. He will win in much better company later on. * He Habit, who finished third in the Camp Handicap, is a three-j-ear-old filly by the Absurd horse Thespian from Cowl, the dam of Rational, Veil, The Monk and Mask. She has the family brilliancy, and she looks a good prospect for hack sprints, though she may not stay. 'Jfi He He Proud Knight ran a good race in the Camp Handicap, and he was running on in great style at the end. He ije He H* The South Canterbury gelding. Quin Opal, showed a brilliant burst of speed in the Camp Handicap. He was one of the leaders for over half a mile, and he can be marked off for an early win.

TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s summer meeting close at noon on Thursday next. * h« * * Acceptances for the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting close on Friday next at 5 p.m. '* * 41 * The trotter Bingen Star in the early part of the season showed a lot of speed in his races, but did not race steadily. In his latest efforts, however, he has kept much better to his gait, but in the meantime seems to have lost a good deal of his speed. Bingen Star is in R. B. Berry’s stable. Hs He He He The Australian pacer, Snowshoe, showed some fine form when he was raced in the Dominion, being a fine pacer over two-mile courses. He has been racing well of late in Melbourne, and recently, from a back mark, was just beaten in a fast run race through some of his gear giving way. Snowshoe did not always look too sound when racing here. The trotter Audominion used to be a tine: stayer, but he seems to be losing his stamina in races. He keeps much more steady than formerly, but fails to see out a two-mile journey. * * * * John Mauritius is going well in his work, and in his latest efforts in races has shown some of his old form. He should not be long before being returned a winner. * * * * Talaro has not raced too well in his races this season, and the Great Audubon pacer seems to have lost form. He may show improvement when the tracks are not so hard. * * * * Avalanche is still being kept in work, but the trotter is not improving, and he will be very lucky if he wins another race now that he is opposed to so many young and improving trotters. The trotter Dipnoi is reported to be trotting a good deal steadier in his work than formerly, and v?ill be taken to race at Wellington next Saturday. He * h« He J. J. Kennerley did not remain long in his new position in Auckland, and the ex-Australian trainer-owner is ex pected to be back in his old quarters at Sprevdon in a few weeks. J. R Kennerley has been located in his father's place for some months past, and has been gradually getting a useful team together. Before Kennerley left for his new position in the north he had a promising lot of young pacers in work, and no doubt he will commence work on them again. He won the New Zealand Cup this season for. his patron with Peter Bingen, who was also successful last season in the big race. GOOD PROSPECTS AT ASHHURST MEETING. FORM REVIEWED FOR TO-MORROW'S RACES. (By MARTIAN.) Despite the big meeting at Trentham. the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club has received excellent acceptances for its annual meeting to-morrow, and there should be some first-class racing. Some good horses are engaged in the Ashhurst Cup, while the Pohangina Handicap, the chief sprint, should be a fast-run race. Vinella Improving. The day’s racing will commence with the Hack Hurdles Handicap, in which Aurora Borealis is top weight. She raced at Trentham, and may not be on hand. Omeo has won all his three races this season, and is evidently a fair sort. Vinella should be all the better for her races at Foxton, when she was twice third, and the furlong less will suit her. Rouex is a newcomer to hurdling, but reports from the north credit him with shaping well in his schooling tasks. Raukaponga was a close, third at Hastings the other day in a jumpers’ flat handicap, YVilmoreana being second. Four Aces looks the best of the light-weights, after

his second to Fine Acre at Foxton. Vinella and Omeo should provide a good finish. Roundelay Looks Good. If Roundelay is saddled up for the Maiden Stakes he will be a staunch favourite. The Limond youngster was unplaced in his last two starts, but previous to these only Vali beat him in the Spring Trial Stakes, at Trentham, at even weights. Trisogne’s second to San Quex'at Hastings was a promising effort, and he should be in demand. Evening Hero won nicely at Foxton, Derry Belle was a good third to Parfait Amour and Dainty Manners at Taumarunui, and General Gas was second to Projection at Tauherenikau. Roundelay appeals most, and perhaps General Gas and Derry Belle will do best of the remainder. The Raider. Ridgemount has only to be on the scene to take part in the Pohangina Handicap to make his presence felt. The Leighton gelding has been galloping well this season, more in keeping with his early promise. Bonogne, from the same stable, has an engagement in the Raumai Handicap. The Raider should also be a nuisance if he races up to his Feilding form, where he won a double, beating high-class fields each day. Blimp’s mission will probably be the Cup, but Dobbin was in form at Hastings, where he scored a first and a second. Broad Acre, Hopwood and Moorland were proifiinent at Foxton, and of the three Hopwood should improve most. The Raider and Ridgemount look the picks. Mandy’s Good Form. The biggest field of the day is down to contest the Siberia Hack Handicap. Brown Sugar is sure to go a solid race, while Mandy’s first and second at Tauherenikau, in •which she beat some good performers, points to her chances. Tea Taster is speedy, but has raced disappointingly since winning at Egmont. Green Acre won nicely at Stratford. High Society is due. Joy Germ is speedy, and should show tip. Belle Star recorded a couple of successes during the holidays. Rule Britannia and Miss Quex are recent winners. Mandy’s form looks the best, and she may find Green Acre most troublesome.

The Cup. The material is there to provide a good contest in the Ashhurst Cup. Merry Damon now meets Blimp on 41b better terms than when the latter beat him in the Foxton Cup, Billion dividing the pair. These three are again engaged, and Billion might upset them both. Otairi won well,at Marton, but now has a big load. The Swell is in great order, and his winning turn is near at hand. Perhaps he will be reserved for the Raumai Handicap, in which his chances appeal more. Avro ran fourth each day at Marton, and is due, while High Court is an improving sort, having recorded a couple of wins and a third in his last three starts. Admiral Drake is nicely weighted, but the last furlong may find him wanting. Rameses is due, while Kawhakina’s double at Foxton has earned him an eleven-pound penalty. Discourse showed improved form at Foxton. If Blimp runs as generously as at Foxton he will again be hard to beat. Billion and Otairi may be the best of the others. Gold Bag’s Prospects. Disrank was unlucky at Foxton, and may make amends in the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup. Briar Root’s chances look better here than in the Cup. Gold Bag will be a popular fancy, while Malapat w’ill have friends. Democratic,

who mixes flat racing with hurdling, may surprise. Form points to Gold Bag and Disrank. Brown Sugar Appeals. Brown Sugar should go a good race in the-Komaka Hack Handicap if she is reserved. Manrjy is again engaged, while Royal Opera has only to be at his l»est to be the hardest to beat. Perhaps Brown Sugar and Royal Opera will fight out the finish. Thrift a Solid Miler. The day’s racing will conclude with the Raumai Handicap. A number of the contestants, have earlier engagements, and scratchings will be frequent. Thrift is a fresh horse who will see out the distance well. Cerf is. another down to make his first appearance. Moepai is in form. Merry Damon, The Swell, Bonogne, Rameses and Discourse have other engagments. I All are in form. Of the lot, Discourse, if reserved, may do best. 'Thrift andDiscourse may fight out the finish. The following is the programme:
