RIFLE AND RANGE

WITH THE .303

BY ‘TRIGGER.”

FIXTURES

February 22—Canterbury Rifle Association's annual contest for the Jack Shield. February 27 to March s—National Rifle Association’s Dominion championship at Trentham. Burst Guns.

There have been many instances of guns in which the action gave way or the barrel was ripped open. In but a very small percentage of such cases is the fault due to the gun or the ammunition. Possibly the most common cause of such accidents is an obstruction in the barrel. Water, snow, a bullet jacket or any similar obstruction which will cause temporary or permanent stoppage of the bullet, wall build up the powder gases to such an extent that the barrel steel is unable to withstand the pressure and, not being able to pass the obstruction, escapes through the weakest part of the barrel wall. The use of a lubricant on a bullet has caused many bolts to give way as the lubricant invariably coats the chamber and reduces the frictional contact between the brass case and the chamber, thereby allowing the full force of the gas to act directly upon the head of the bolt or breech block.—“ The Canadian Marksman”.

Christchurch v. Rangiora. Members of the Christchurch Defence Rifle Club journeyed to Rangiora on Saturday and there fired a match against the local Defence Club. Owing to the north-west gale the shooting did not start until 3 p.m. The match was to consist of three ranges, but, owing to the wind, the large targets would not stand, so the shooting took place at 300 and 200 yards, with two optional sighters and seven shots. Conditions were against high scores at 300 yards, but were much easier at the shorter distance. The finish was very close and exciting, the North Canterbury team winning by one point. / At the conclusion of the match Vicepresident A. Prestney thanked the visitors* for coming up under such bad weather conditions. Vice-president R H. Neill replied on behalf of the Christchurch Club. The scores were as fol-

Jottings. The shooting at the recent Canterbury meeting was a triumph for the cut down barrel. The first three men in the championship used the shorter barrel. At Redcliffs next Saturday local clubs will fire competitions at 500 and 600 yards. The South Island meeting will be held at Blenheim at Easter. Results of the provincial match have not yet come to hand from headquarters.
