£l6o STOLEN FROM A BANK.

THIEF AT DANNEVIRKE WAS NOT OBSERVED

Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, January 6. The sum of £l6O was stolen from the Dannevirke branch of the Commercial Bank this morning between 10.15 and 10.20. During the temporary absence at the rear of the building of the teller (Mr Gimblett), some person entered the premises, which are situated in the main street opposite the post office, and, making the most of the opportunity, walked out with a roll of notes. The only other member of the staff present was the manager (Mr R. Chisholm), who was in his private office at the rear of the chamber where public business is transacted. The money was in the teller’s drawer on the inside of a four-foot counter. The individual who made the daring theft had to open the door of the grille, reach over the counter and abstract the notes from the drawer. The manager, hearing a noise, came from his office to investigate and saw no one but a shadow on the window dividing off the compartment where the ledgers are kept. On Mr Gimblett’s return, he mentioned the incident. Investigation of the cash drawer was made immediately and the loss of the notes was discovered. The police are now making inquiries.
