MAGISTRATE’S COURT. A middle-aged farmer of Cave appeared at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged that on January 2, at Cave, he threatened to destrov the dwelling house of Dr G. 11. Ussher. Sergeant Peterson asked for leave to withdraw the charge on account of circumstances which had arisen. Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., granted the application, stating that it was obvious that the man was not normal. GERALDINE. The holidays in Geraldine have passed without serious accidents in this district and most of the local residents have got back to work. Sunny days and warm temperatures appear to have set in and men’s minds are turning to the need for finishing the shearing and to preparing for harvest time. Mr B. R. Macdonald, who has, for fourteen years taken observations at “Waitui,” on the Geraldine Downs, reports that the rainfall for December was

5.30 in. He states that during these fourteen years the last month of the year has given the highest average rainfall, namely 3.20 inches. September coining next with 2.93 inches, October third with 2.54 inches, July fourth with 2.4 S inches and November fifth with 2.47 inches, while January with an average of 2.02 inches has given the smallest rainfall. There were only ten days last month on which rain did not fall and the total rainfall for the year was 34.68 inches. Mrs J. M. Tripp gave a delightful garden party at “Silverton’’ on New Year’s-Day, entertaining a large number of guests. A tennis tournament was played. A cricket match. W.E.A. v Geral dine, was won on the first in* by the Geraldine Club, with a tot: 172. the highest scores being Mu..-bison (retired) 63, C. Williams (retired) 43 and E. Scott 21. The W.E.A. innings closed for S 5. E. Hayes 27. AUev 15. Vyorrall 13 and G. Cotter not out 11. A tennis match, W.E.A. v. Geraldine, was also played, including ladies singles, men’s singles, ladies’ doubles, men’s doubles and combined doubles Geraldine won by 13 to 6. TEMUKA. Th*e carnival and picnic, promoted by the Milford Lagoon Association, took place on Wednesday. From an early hour the ground was a hive of industry, the officials being hard at work making the necessary preparations. Apart from the sports the visitors found enjoyment in other ways, such as boating, fishing and swimming. The boys from the Bramwell Booth Boys’ Home, under Major Powick, were in attendance, as also were the Girl Guides, who are at present camped on the Temuka Domain. The Maoris gave a musical performance, and their efforts were much appreciated. The baby show Was again a feature. and the association is much indebted to Mesdames A. R. Guild and M’lntosh for judging the six classes. Following are the results of the sports:—

Mr A. G. Smart, Bank of Australasia, Wellington, and Mr J. G. Smart, of the Public Works Department, who have been spending the Christmas holidays with their parents, Mr and Mrs J. T. Smart, returned north yesterday.
