NOR’-WESTER MAKES DAY ENERVATING.

TEMPERATURE WAS NOT AS HIGH AS YESTERDAY. A strong north-west wind made conditions in the city very oppressive to:lay. Though the temperature was not high—the thermometer registered 72.8 degrees at noon—the wind made the conditions very enervating, and the dust added further to the general discomfort. Though the wind was not at gale force, occasional gusts attained high velocity. A limb of the poplar tree on the river bank that was recently damaged by lightning was blown down. At the time when this tree was first damaged, the City Council erected a danger sign on it, warning people to keep clear. This notice proved effective, and nobodv was near when the limb crashed. It was promptly removed bv council workmen. The Waimakariri River is normal and it was reported to-day that it showed no tendency to rise. There is now comparatively little snow on the ranges, and the nor-’wester therefore has not the effect it would have had earlier in the season cf causing a big fresh in the river.
