FROM THE “STAR” SIXTY YEARS AGO.

ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF JAN. 5. 1870. The Gothenburg’s Mails.—The Australian mails by the Gothenburg, which arrived in the Hokitika roadstead at 8.30 p.m. on Monday night, will not be brought over by the coach due this evening. Why, only the postmaster at Hokitika knows. We believe he received instructions to have them landed and sent over. It is probable that the weather had something to do with the matter. Be that as it may, the Gothenburg’s mails •will be brought by the Gotherburg herself. Cricket.—A match will be played on Saturday next, and Saturday, January 15, between Old Chums and New Chums. The sides will be selected from the following:—Old Chums: Messrs Blakison, Calvert, Condell, Cotterill, Cox, Dic.kinson, Hobbs, Moore, Parkerson. Stevens, Taylor, Turner, Wood. New Chums: Messrs Anson, Beauford, Fowler, Harley, Maples, Mainwaring, Mason, Miles, Odell, Pierce, Reade and Souter. New Year’s Eve.—The teetotallers of Waimate gave their annual soiree and ball at the schoolroom, which was elegantly decorated for the occasion with flowers and evergreens, on New Year’s Eve. After tea speeches and songs instructed and amused the audience until 9 o’clock, when the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till the small hours of the morning, in which it was plainly seen that if those present hadn’t any spirits in the head, they had plenty in their toes, for they danced the daylight in with vigour. NOTICE. A coach is now running between the Junction Hotel, Papanui Road, and the Railway Station, to and from every train. SIMMONS AND CO., Proprietors.
