DRESSING SHED FOR ST JAMES PARK.

Mr J. Sturrock, secretary of the St James Park Improvement Committee, has sent the following letter to the City Council:—“ It has come to our knowledge that the Reserves Committee of the City Council intend moving an old borer-infested building from Richmond Domain to St James Park. A few of the residents are of the opinion that such a building would mar the beauty of the park, as it would certainly not be in keeping with the surroundings. Further, the cost of shifting the building and the renovation would go a long way, if not completely covering, the amount required to erect a new and more modern building. Would it be possible for the transfer of the shed to be held over till after the holidays and until such time as the matter has been discussed with local societies interested in the park?” In reply, the Town Clerk has written to say that the removal will be held over in the mean time and the question reconsidered at the next meeting of the Reserves Committee. WAIMAIRI TENNIS CLUB DANCE. The New Year’s Eve dance held at the Memorial Ilall by the Waimairi Tennis Club was a great success, over 200 dancers taking the floor. Vincent’s Band provided the music, and Mr R. Hampton acted as M.C. THE PAST YEAR. The year has passed in Papanui with out anything of very great note happening. Of far-reaching importance to the district was the Government’s decision to go on with the South Island Main Trunk railway, for this will make the local station the terminus for all the North Island passenger traffic. Plans are out for the new Technical College on Langdon’s Road, and it is possible that a start will be made with the building at no distant date. With the appointment of Mr Barnett as city curator, St James Park has been completely laid out, a very fin 6 shrubbery planted, and a children’s playground area laid in lawn. The funds raised to procure children’s playground equip ment has been used to erect some boat

swings and a chute. The Domains Board has decided to erect a pavilion and conveniences at the Papanui Domain. In the business section the addition of another bank is noted and several new shops have been erected. All the sports bodies are in a flourishing condition. For the new year the biggest needs are for the Northcote Settlement houses to be either let or sold and for the main roads to be put in good order. BOY SCOUTS A number of parents in Papanui aie indebted to Mr W. Moffott for the interest he has taken in the Scout camp at Allandale. Mr Moffott has acted as secretary for the local parents’ committee which has raised funds to equip the camp, and so as to be near the camp Mr and Mrs Moffott camped in an adjoining field, and Mrs Moffott acted as “ camp mother ” and lightened some of the burdens of the younger boys. The boys numbered eighteen and were in the charge of Scoutmaster Cyril Clarkson and Assistant-Scoutmaster Jack Clarkson. The camping place was picturesquely situated, and protected from all the prevailing winds. There w r ere bathing places near, and cricket and football were played. The boys cooked their own meals and did the camp duties. The grounds were kindly lent by Mr R Allan, after whom Allandale was named, and the troop received many kindnesses at his hands. Mr W. P. Spencer, of Spencerville, Ouruhia, is again offering his services as a candidate for the East Sub-Divi-sion in connection with the Waimaki riVi River Trust election to be held on the 14th inst.
