Major and Mrs Gallaher, who have been staying at Warner’s Hotel, left for the West Coast this morning. Dr G. E. Gillett and Mrs Gillett, Kaiapoi, are spending a fortnight's holiday- at Ilundalee Miss Ellie Brady, South Loburn. is the guest of Miss Edna Scott, of Springfield. Misses J. Feltham and M. Wise, of Wellington East Girls’ College, are staying with Miss E. Scotter, Cambridge Terrace. Miss Betty Cotterill, Cashmere Hills, will leave next week to spend a holiday with Mrs Charles Rattray, Waikouaiti. Mrs Maurice Fell (St George’s .School, Wanganui), is staying with Mrs Merton, Montreal Street. Miss Mary Hogg and Miss Frances Farmer (Cashmere Hills) will leave this evening for Trentham, to attend the Girl Guides’ camp. Mr and Mrs H. Thomas, Gardiner’s Road, Harewood, who have been spending an enjoyable holiday at Mata" Mata, Xorth Island, will return home early this month. Mr and Mrs A. S. Bush are at present visiting Mrs Bush's mother, Mrs R. H. Browne, Armagh Street, before proceeding to Auckland, where they will reside in future. Lady Hore-Ruthven, the wife of Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven, V.C., Governor of South Australia, who has been staying at Warner's Hotel, left this morning for the West Coast. The engagement is announced of Bertha, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Harrison, St Albans, to Ronald 11. Miles, of Palinerston Xorth, youngex son of Mr and Mrs H. M. Miles, of Merivale, 9 Countess Craigavon, wife of the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, will pass through Christchurch this morning on her way to the West Coast. She will be accompanied by her husband Viscount Craigax’on. West African woman are rightly proud of the achievement of one of their number, Miss Agnes Savage, of Xigeria, who has qualified as a doctor of medicine at Edinburgh University at the age of 23. Recently at her residence, EasternTerrace, -Beckenham, Mrs A. L. Newbery and friends entertained Miss Sarah Atkinson, who has since been married to Mr A. Forrester. The gathering took the form of a china evening, and a pleasant time was spent in songs, games and dancing. Miss Atkinson was the recipient of many beautiful and useful gifts. The residence of Mr and Mrs John Hayward, 17, Faraday Street, was the scene of a pleasant evening on New Year’s Eve, when Mrs Hayward celebrated her birthday, in conjunction with New Year festivities. Music and games passed the evening pleasantly. A dainty supper was served, after which the guests assembled to usher in the New Year. Delight with the scenery of New Zealand was expressed by Lady HoreRuthven, wife of Sir Alexander HoreRuthven, V.C., Governor of South Australia, in a brief interview with a “Times’* reporter last evening. She was especially pleased with Christchurch. Lady Hore-Ruthven is > accompanied on her visit to New Zealand by her sister. Thev are engaged on a holi day tour of the Dominion, and what they have seen already of the country has convinced them that New Zealand has a charm all its own. They have already seen a great deal of the X T orth Island, and are now in search of beauty in the South Island. Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven is at present engaged on a sporting holiday in the South Island.

Party at Templeton. The staff of the Templetor. Farm School entertained a number of guests at their party on the evening of January 1. The reception room was decorated with gay colours. The guests were received by Miss Brand, and a happy evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by the Woodward Orchestra. Supper was served in the din-ing-room. and dancing was continued till midnight, when the party broke up with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Among those present were Mrs (Dr) M’Killop, Dr and Mrs Lewis.
