Robert Cockburn Remanded Without Bail At The Christchurch Hearing

Arrested in Dunedin under sensational charges and charged there with breaking and entering and safe-blow-ing. to which he pleaded guilty. Robert Cockburn stepped into the dock in the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch to-day.

The Court proceedings in Dunedin were on December 23. Cockburn was then committed to Christchurch for sentence on the Dunedin charges. Today he was charged with an offence in this city. The charge against him was that he broke and entered by night the count-ing-house of the Kiwi Dairy Company, and stole £3B. On November 24 the safe at the Kiwi Dairy Company’s factory was blown open. Cockburn, who was not represented by counsel, is a young man, active,

alert and smart in appearance, with a fresh complexion. He was neatly and well dressed. As soon as the charge was read, Chief-Detective J. Carroll said: “There are other charges against him, and we ask for a remand.” Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.. granted the remand, and fixed Tuesday next as the date on which Cockburn will come up again. Cockburn’s occupation is given as a miner. He told the Dunedin police that he had come to Christchurch from Greymouth. On the charge-sheet Scotland is given as his native country.
