Otago Escape Innings Defeat By Five Runs; Woolley Deadly.

Pf-r Press Association, DUNEDIN, January 2. In beautiful weather and on a much improved wicket, the M.C.C-. team defeated Otago at Carisbrook to-dav by ten wickets. Otago’s downfall was mainly due to the tine bowling of Woolley, who took six wickets for 50 runs in the first innings and four for 38 in second. Tie bowled in tireless fashion and kept a length which made it impossible for the batsmen to adopt anvthing but the most careful methods. Even more accurate than Woolley, however, was the Derbyshire fast medium bowler. Worthington, who frequentlv had the batsmen guessing, and facing whom they showed the greatest re straint. lie sent tip twenty-seven overs for only 2S runs, and took three wickets. The other bowler who met with success was Legge, who. as a matter of fact, secured the best average with three wickets for 24 runs. He

has bowled only once previously in New Zealand, but on this occasion was favoured by good fortune, one of his victims being Blunt, who hit his wicket. The batsmen soon began to punish him, and he was taken off, but the change had served its purpose. A remarkable feature of the Englishmen s bowling was the number of no balls, no fewer than twenty-eight of a hic.h were sent up during the match. The Englishmen’s field was cleverly Placed, and their work was clean and -mart. There was an absence to-day of wild throwing in which marred their display on Wednesday. Scores:— M.C.C.
