GENERAL SMUTS VISITING CANADA.
MEETS DOMINION PRIME MINISTER. (United Press Assn.—By Electrle Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, January 1. General Jan Smuts, who arrived in New York yesterday for a three weeks’ visit to Canada and the United States, proceeded at once to Ottawa to meet the Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King. He is due to return to New York on Saturday, where as the guest of the League of Nations Union he will address a number of meetings in connection with the tenth birthday of the League. lie will also address the council of the Foreign Policy Association and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. General Smuts will visit several other cities, including Washington, where he will meet President Hoover. BASIS OF LEAGUE IS BRITISH EMPIRE. VANCOUVER. January 2. General Jan Smuts, who is on his first visit to Canada, travelling in the interests of the League of Nations, was interviewed to-day. He said that the basis of the league was the British Empire, and the Imperial Conferences held since the eighties were the foundations upon which the league was built. He declared that in South Africa secession was a dead issue.
