ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF JAN. 3, 1870. * News by Mail.—A French inventor has taken out a patent for “ stockings with garters attached.” zs 55 News by Mail.—Placards have been posted at Clapham containing the following piquant invitation to worshippers at “ Bethesda Chapel ”: — “ Ned Wright, who before his conversion was convicted three times of burglary, will deliver a Gospel address. Come and welcome! No collection!” Barque Otago.—Messrs Alexander Stephen and Sons launched, on October 5, from their works at Kelvinhaugh, a fine new iron sailing barque, named the Otago, of 450 tons, and highest class at Lloyds. The vessel was buiit to the order of Captain Angus Cameron, of Port Chalmers, and is intended for the inter-colonial trade. She left home on the 25th of the same month, with a cargo for Adelaide. Dr Livingstone.—We extract the following paragraph from “ La Patrie ” of the Bth of October last: —A missionary, who debarked at Falmouth on the 6th inst., coming from Zanzibar, brings news with him to the effect that Dr Kirk, at Zanzibar, has received letters from Livingstone himself. The letters were dated from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, February, 1869. Livingstone was in good health, but as he had little provisions, all his European companions had left him. Some Arabs alone furnished him with rice and fruits for his subsistence. V.R. Dalwood’s line of Royal Mail coaches will leave Barnard’s Repository every Tuesday and Friday for Hokitika, at 6 am.
