N.Z. GOLF COURSES.
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —I agree with Dr H. J. Morlan that Shirley is the best course in New Zealand. It is Kennerly Rumford’s favourite course. I don’t agree with the doctor about Hamilton—l am surprised that it got championship status. All the courses in the North Island suffer from two faults—flatness, and clay, or sticky soil, which make them unpleasant winter courses. Wanganui is an exception. This course is perhaps a better golf test than Shirley is. “No golf course on the West Coast.” I am told Greymouth has quite a nice course. At any rate it produced a New Zealand champion. Nelson will have a delightful championship course when she can spend the money. “Windy, hilly Dunedin.” I had a twofoot putt blown into the hole on the Spion Kop green. That was a remarkable performance that mighty hitter Shaw put up at Napier, beating bogey by 10. I saw him hit the longest ball I have ever seen hit at Shirley. It must have been fifty yards further than the exhibition shots put up by Kirkwood in the same direction. That graceful Gaisford girl player Jrom Marton hit the longest ball I have seen a woman drive—2l3 yards from “The Pines” tee. The ideal golf course must be undulating. The Municipal links has this qualification. —I am, etc., PETER TROLOVE.
