OPPERMAN TO MEET O’SHEA ON MONDAY.

Next Monday night two brilliant cyclists will meet in a specially arranged match race at English Park. Hubert Opperman, the popular Australian cyclist, who has many world’s records to his credit, will meet the Dominion’s greatest cyclist, Phil O'Shea, in a tandem-paced race of five miles. Both Opperman and O'Shea have each won a heat, and the final should provide one of the most thrilling contests ever witnessed in New Zealand. Opperman is confident of victory, whilst O’Shea’s supporters are equally confident that the veteran can more than hold his own against his formidable rival. Opperman will also contest a race against W. T. Weir. This race will he a particularly interesting one, consisting of a three-distance motor-paced event. Opperman has proved his worth as a motor-paced rider by breaking records in Australia, on the Continent and in New Zealand. He will, however, find a strong rival in W. T. Weir, who has been selected to race Opperman after an exhaustive test. A well-varied programme includes a five miles invitation scratch race and several cycling events, in which the best talent in New Zealand will compete. The Christchurch Municipal Band will be in attendance from 7.30 p.m., the racing commencing at eight o’clock.
