Racing and Trotting.

(BY

“ARGUS.”)

RACING NOTES. Nominations close on January 14 for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, the principal events at the autumn meeting of the Victoria Racing Club. Hi Hi H« Sfc Hunting Cry, the winner of the Great Northern Derby, was unplaced in his first five starts as a two-year-old but he wound up the season by winning a handicap at Hastings in the autumn. Early this season he won a hack race at Wanganui and a fortnight later he won the Hawke's Bay Guinneas. lie was third to Eaglet and Pink Coat in the Great Northern Guineas and two days later he beat a good field over a mile and a quarter in the King Edward Handicap. After beeing unplaced in the Harcourt Cup at Trentham, he came to Riccarton. He finished close behind the placed horses in the Stewards’ Handicap and was unplaced again in the Criterion Handicap, winding up with a win in the Stony hurst Handicap. Then he went north for the Auckland meeting, lie started off on Boxing Day by winning the Railway Handicap and on Monday he won the King's Plate, and scoring his third success at the meeting yesterday in the Derby. He has been improving steadily all'this season and he may go on now to further good deeds, as he has shown that he can hold his own over all distances. His sire, Hunting Song, by the unbeaten English horse, Hurry On, has made a great start at the stud, with a Derbv winner in his first season. Though deprived of the services of his crack three-vear-old. Honour, who is amiss, Mr G. D. Greenwood found Jaloux a useful representative in the Great Northern Derby, and he put up a good performance to finish second. Jaloux has been an unlucky horse so far as he has been placed in several good races without being able to win.

The performance of Count Cavour in winning the Auckland Racing Club Handicap was freely anticipated, after his third in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. It is not hard to realise that his success would be well received, as he is a popular horse at Ellerslie, where he has run some of his best races. He made his first appearance in the summer of his three-year-old season, when he was unplaced in the Plunket Handicap, as a preliminary to winning the Derby. He went back in the autumn to capture the President’s Handicap and the St Leger. At four years he was second to Rapine in the Auckland Cup, third (9.5) in the Racing Club Handicap, and first in the Clifford Plate. A year later, with 9.5, he was second to Tanadees in the Auckland Cup, second (10.2) in the Racing Club Handicap, and again beat Rapine in the Clifford Plate. Four years ago he carried 9.5 and was second to Rapier in the Auckland Cup, and he fell in the Racing Club Handicap. He was unplaced in the Auckland Cup and Racing Club Handicap, and third in the Clifford Plate a year ago. Since then Count Cavour has been on the down grade,' and as a result he is now racing with luxurious weights. At the same time, his win yesterday was quite a notable event, as he had not previously won a race since he captured the Trentham Gold Cup in the autumn of 1927.

The death is reported from Melbourne of the English-bred stallion, Comedy King. During 1907 Mr S. Green, who had just established the Shipley Stud, was on a Visit to England, where he purchased the Gallinule mare, Tragedy Queen, with her Persimmon co!t foal, for 1750 guineas. The foal, who was to gain great fame in Australia as a racehorse and a sire, was Lomedy King. The youngster appealed strongly to the late Count Lehndorff, who was then director of the Prussian Government Stud at Giaditz. He made Mr Green a tempting offer for the colt, but it was refused. Comedy King was given time to mature and he did not race till he was three years old, at which age he won the Caulfield Futurity Stakes in his second start. The following spring he won the Melbourne Cup. He also scored a number of wins in weight-for-age events, Trafalgar, Prince Foote, Alawa, Parsee, Broadsword and Lady Medallist being among the good horses he beat in those races, though Trafalgar had his revenge on more than one occasion. During his racing career he won eight races, was second seven times, and

third four times, his stake earnings being £12,945. On his retirement to the stud he quickly made his mark as a sire. In a little over fourteen years, up to the first quarter of this season, 389 of his progeny won 543 races, with stakes totalling £288,656. His best performers included Artilleryman, whose three-year-old successes included the Melbourne Cup, a race in which King Ingoda also triumphed. One of his good sons, Biplane, came to New Zealand, and in the colours of Mr G. D. Greenwood he scored Derby wins in Sydney and Melbourne. Few of Comedy King’s sons have had much opportunity at the stud, but several of his daughters have thrown winners, though none has proved a really great brood mare. Nearly twelve years ago, at the disposal of the Shipley Stud, Comedy King was purchased by the late Mr Norman Falkiner for 7300 guineas, and since then he had been at the Noorij lim Stud. Mr Falkiner died recently and his stud will be disposed of in the autumn.

t TROTTING NOTES. j 1 i Admiral Bingen, who won the Intro- 1 ductory Handicap at Addington yesterday, is a fast trotter who, however, does not stay well. He is by Nelson Bingeq. from Bonny Jenny and is an improving trotter. He is a very fast beginner and keeps well to his gait. * * * * Nelson’s Prince made a very fast beginning in the Introductory Handicap and was quickly in the lead. He did not quite see out the journey. He won on the second day at Forbury Park at the end of November, when the track was very heavy. Like his conqueror, he is not a good stayer. * * * He Anon, who won the Templeton Handicap, was well backed in the Midsummer Handicap at Ashburton on Boxing Day, but raced very badly. In the Templeton Handicap, although the speed was on all the way, Anon finished well and won in fast time. She is a five-year-old mare by Author Dillon from Proceed and has a lot of speed. She is trained by D. Withers, who drove her. * * * 5}S Rolex went a fine race in the Templeton Handicap, in which he finished second to Anon. Rolex has settled down to solid work in his races and was unlucky to go fast over the distance and then get beaten. s}s * Hs _ ❖ Kautoma is now racing very generously for L. Frost. He put up a capital race at Ashburton and finished third in the Templeton Handicap in a very fast run race, in which he was in the picture all the way. F. Holmes has persevered with 1 Logan Chief and the big pacer has at ; last rewarded him by winning a good • two-mile event. Logan Chief has been > racing a long time, and while always ‘ brilliant, had to be in his very best 1 form to have any chance over a two--5 mile journey. The Canterbury Handir cap was run to suit him, as the first > mile was very slow and Logan Chief . was in second place behind Mai--1 whariti. The veteran thus had every ' chance and he got up to win on the • post, after finishing very resolutely 5 under punishment. * * H« ; Maiwhariti led till right on the post ■ in the Canterbury Handicap. Not far [ from the finish he mixed his gait badly and was not back pacing again till 1 the winning post was passed. Like . the winner, he was favoured by the 1 slow pace in the first half of the jourr ney. „ * * * * j Sonoma, who is a half-brother by i Sonoma Harvester to Tom Thumb, made no race of the Lyttelton Ilandi- , cap. He is a rare good stayer, but he ’ has raced very disappointingly in some of his races, going in patches in 1 his races. He evidently races better T in front of the field, as in the Lyttelton Handicap he was in the lead throughout and won decisively. Al- ‘ though the class was 4min 40sec, So--5 noma only went 3-5 of a second 5 slower than Logan Chief, who won the l 4min 29sec class. * * He He He a t Arikitoa showed his stamina in the 5 concluding stages of the Lyttelton Hant- dicap by finishing strongly and getting f second place. The Taraire pacer had s no chance, however, with Sonoma. The Blenheim-owned trotter, Ukur lele Lady, paid a good dividend when i she won the Stewards’ Handicap. The V Australian-bred mare raced well but g unsuccessfully at the November meeting on the same course in mile and a half races. She is evidently a good , stayer. 1 * * He Lenwood showed a lot of speed in the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he finished second to Ukulele Lady. He broke at the finish, but it is doubtful if he would have beaten the Blenheim trotter, even if he had kept to his gait. John Mauritius showed some of his old form in the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he finished third. lie was giving away 72yds, and had none the best of the running. lie will do better j with some more racing. * * * * Athalone, who won the Islington r Handicap in fast time, showed up well ' in the Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day, when he finished second to Billy Sea. * He is by the defunct Harold Dillon, ' and is a fine stayer, in addition to 5 having plenty of speed. H< H= 1 Roi l’Or showed a fine burst of - speed in the Islington Handicap, in 2 which he finished second to Athalone. 1 He had to cover a lot of extra ground > going down the back stretch the last 2 time. Roi l’Or is a very brilliant sprin 1 ter. ) * * h« He 1 Roddy accounted for the Railway ; Handicap, the mile saddle event, in } good style. He was well backed at > Ashburton, but finished out of a place, i He is a useful pacer by Rey de Oro ; from Franzalena, and is trained at - Waimate. The race was run in heavy t rain and on a sloppy track. [ Phu Smith* who i* now well up it. years, paced a fair race in the Railway ‘ Handicap. He made a good beginning | and stayed out the journey a long way better than was expected. lie was the outsider of the field. Hs H< H* H: Arikitoa, after finishing second to Sonoma in the Lyttelton Handicap, in which he made a slow beginning, won the Au Revoir Handicap in good style. He did not seem to be troubled by the heavy going and his stamina was in evidence in the concluding stages. He is a useful pacer by Taraire, who has very fe-v of his progeny racing in the Dominion. * * Hs H= Lady Cello is not yet thoroughly seasoned for a hard two mile contest, but the Cello-Sydney Wilkes mare is very speedy and is quite at home on heavy tracks. She is a half sister to Author Jinks and John Jinks, this trio of speedy pacers being inmates of D. Teahen’s stable at Pleasant Point

The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance and the racing was good. The starting, however, was very indifferent. The totalisator put through £21,011, against £19,397 on the first day last year. Jen was first choice for the Otatara Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, though at a good price, the next two backed being Delude and Birkbeck. Jen might have been close up but for being knocked back when making his run in the straight. A protest for interference was lodged and an inquiry was held but it was considered there was not sufficient evidence to justify any action being taken. Rakauponga, followed by Fiery Comet, led most of the way, but in the straight Wilmoreana and Birk beck came through, and in a punishing finish Birkbeck gained the verdict by a neck from Wilmoreana, who was a neck in front of Rakauponga. Portray was a strong first choice for the Mahora Maiden Stakes, with San Quex and Tino Tama following in fav ouritism. A fine race ensued and the finish would probably have been close had the start been a good one. Blackpool led at the start, with Miss Quex Portray, Tino Tama and San Quex handy. In the straight Portray made a yreat effort to catch Miss Quex, who had taken command a furlong from home, but Miss Quex won by half a length from Portray, with San Quex third and Merry Melody fourth. There were only four runners for the Hastings Handicap, Zippor being most fancied, with Brown Sugar next. The favourite made the running until hall way down the straight, where Moepai caught him and after a short struggle beat him by nearly a length. Brown Sugar was a close third. Kahikatoa’s number was most inquir . ed for in the Juvenile Handicap, Jenny Diver, Rapallo and Ruby Step being the next lot inquired for. They fin ished in the order in which they were backed. The start was delayed by the vagaries of Gasconade and Dia mond Maid and when the start, not a very good one, was effected Diamond Moon was left. Jenny Diver made all the running, but Kahikatoa put in a strong claim in the straight and won by a neck. Rapallo was a good third and Ruby Step fourth. High Court and Balloon were the twc. chief fancies for the President’s Handicap. King's Jest led Balloon for the greater part of the journey, with Merry Damon at the rear of the field. Ir the straight High Court and Merrj Damon came fast but Merry Damon seemed to strike trouble in trying to get through on the inside. High Court beat King’s Jest by a short half length Merry Damon being a similar distance away third and Balloon fourth. It looked as though, better handled. Merry Damon might have won. A field of a dozen faced the starter in the Waipatu Hack Handicap. Grattus, who drew the extreme outside position, was most in favocr, but there was good backing for Autumnia, Te Awha and Plane. Kimbo made all the running until his condition gave out, when Autumnia took charge, closely followed by Plane and Grattus. Plane finished better than Autumnia and won b\- a neck. Cuticle carried the confidence of the largest number of backers in the Havelock Flying Handicap, Kahu Ariki being second in demand and Portray third fancy. As far as the favourite was concerned it was first out and first home, for Cuticle led all the way. The boy riding her took no chances and she won under the whip by a length and a half from Tatoma, who came fast and cut Portray out of second place by half a length. Bernera was fourth. The public went for a recovery on Aston in the last race, the Stewards’ Handicap, and over a thousand tickets were taken out on his chance. Dobbin was second and Moa Bird third fancy. Again the public placed them correctly, for that was the order in which they finished. Aston led all the way and just stalled off a good run by Dobbin to win by half a length. Moa Bird was a good third. WYNDHAM CUP WON BY CIRCULATION. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, January 1. The annual meeting of the Wyndham Racing Club was held to-day in fine but overcast weather. There was a large attendance. The track was heavy. The totalisator handled £16,986 10s, as against £17,769 10s last year. Results:— NEW YEAR HURDLE HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. One mile and five furlongs. Heavy rain overnight and again this morning up to midday augured badly for the Wyndham Racing Club’s annual fixture, but apart from one light shower the afternoon was fine. There was a large attendance. The gate receipts were down by only £SB, while totalisator investments showed a shrinkage of £670. The track was very heavy and holding. Racing was interesting throughout. The principal event, the Wyndham Cup, produced a good race, but in the run home the Dunedin-owned Circulation easily asserted her superiority. For the New Year Hurdles, Maungamoe was three chances better fancied than Red Heather, with Nincompoop about 200 tickets away next. At the second fence Nincompoop dropped his rider. Maungamoe led early, but with a mile to go Red Heather took charge. At the back Red Heather and Maungamoe were galloping and jumping on terms. Crossing the top Maungamoe ran to the front from Red Heather, while Beauty Light commenced a long run. Jumping the last fence well clear, Maungamoe struggled home by three lengths from Beaut)’- Light, with Dubious five lengths away, while Red Heather was three lengths off fourth. Calham came home strongly after fencing carefully and losing ground throughout in his initial attempt over hurdles. Remindful was first fancy for the Trial Plate, carrying about 260 chances more than Wise Choice, with Banner Bay twenty-three tickets off next in demand. Wise Choice was first out from an excellent line. Crossing the top, Crubermore, Wise Choice and Milliner were almost in line. At the turn Crubenmore ran out. Wise Choice held off a late run by Banner Boy and beat him by three-quarters of a length, with Valuator a length and three-quarters away third. Then came Milliner, Skysign and Rombeau. Had Banner Boy not drawn an outside position at the barrier he might have been hard to beat. The winner is a three-year-old filly by Some Boy 11., owned and trained by D. P. Wilson. Wingatui. Banner Boy is a son of Some Boy ll.—Winsome Lassie and is prepared by F. W. Ellis at Invercargill. The favourite never was prominent. For the Diggers’ Trot. Erin Chimes was a warm first selection, carrying 546 chances more than Alva Lass, with Ellegro fifty tickets away next. Alva Lass stood at the mark and La Rona, Ellegro and Fescue Bill presently tangled. Wave Soon led Erin’s Star and a bunch for over a mile, when Sea Hawk and Jack Hobbs closed up. A good race from the turn resulted in Erin's Star beating Jack Hobbs by half a length, Sea Ilawk a length and a half off third, closely attended by Brain Wave fourth. Then came Wave Soon and Erin’s Chimes. Times —3min 43sec, 3min 43 4-ssec, 3min 40 4-ssec. For the Wyndham Cup Black Duke was a pronounced first fancy, carrying 261 tickets more than Queen Balboa, with Night Lad five tickets off in third place, thirty-six supporters ahead of Circulation, while there were followings for Camisader. Tcheka was cut out from a good start. Money Mine led early and was joined by Night Lad going to the back. A little further on Tcheka joined the leaders. The trio were on terms at the far turn, to lead Circulation, Camisader and Queen Balboa across the top. Night Lad appeared to lead into the straight narrowly from Money Mine and Tcheka. Below the distance Circulation raced up to Night Lad and drew out to win by a length and a half. A great finish for second place resulted in favour of Night Lad by a short half length from Queen Balboa, with Camisader close up fourth. Then came Money Mine. Night Lad ran a good race, but was beaten on his merits, as he always was well placed during the race. Black Duke did not handle the very heavy going at all well. For the Mimihau Hack Handicap Jack a Dandy was a pronounced first selection, carrying 439 chances more than Blue Metal, with Flying Binge forty-four tickets off third fancy, sixty supporters clear of Inevitable. From a good start Dry Area took charge early and led to the straight from Ace of Hearts and Jack a Dandy. At, the turn Inevitable got through and took the rails to lead from Jack a Dandy. In a good finish Inevitable won by a head from the fast finishing Blue Metal, with Jack a Dandy half a length off third. Then came Jock o’ Habeldean and Lucky Maid in that order. The winner raced like an improved performer, and may do better

later in the week. Blue Metal was unlucky in the running. Jack a Dandy stumbled nearing home. For the open sprint, the President’s Handicap, the Wellington visitor. Quantum, was first fancy, carrying 292 tickets more than Royal Saxon, with Red Boa fifty-six chances off in third place, fourteen supporters ahead of Subdivision. Other starters also were keenly followed. Full Fling made the early running and then was joined by Subdivision. The pair led well clear across the top, with Royal Saxon putting in a run three lengths off. On turning for home Subdivision headed Full Fling. Then Royal Saxon loomed up, while Red Sea came fast. Going on Royal Saxon won by two lengths from Subdivision, with Red Sea three lengths off third, a neck in front of Full Fling. Royal Saxon outstayed the opposition in the run home to score comfortably from Subdivision. When racing across the top Quantum galloped on Red Boa's heels and dropped back, but did not look like a winner at the turn. Red Sea struck trouble early, but was galloping on well at the finish. The Wyndham-trained Meteor was first selection for the Victory Trot, carrying 144 chances more than the coupled Erin’s Prince and Coldstream Guard, with Sunshade 390 tickets off in third place. A number of others were keenly fancied. Meteor always was in front to lead at the back and across the top from Golden Dawn. At the home turn Gulden Dawn tangled and Sunshade went after the leader. A great race home resulted in Meteor beating sunshade by half a length, Streak five lengths away third. Then came Erin’s Prince and Golden Dawn. Times 4, 4-1, 4-3. Meteor is a promising five-year-old descendant of SungodAdonis mare who is highly thought of in his home district, hence he was heavily supported. For the Visitors’ Hack Handicap, Salmo Salar was first fancy, carrying 283 chances more than Abbeville, with Impertinence seventy-three tickets off in third place, but Dumblane also was keenly supported. From a perfect start Impertinence dashed to the head of affairs and led throughout to the straight from Dumblane and Abbeville. In the run home Impertinence won easily by three lengths from Dumblane, with Salmo Salar close up third, just heading Abbeville. SINGLETON SCORES IN MARTON CUP. Per Press Association. The Marton Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened to-day with a good attendance, and the track in splendid order. A heavy shower fell just before the first race, but afterwards the weather cleared, thoughly a fairly strong wind blew all day. The totalisator turn-over was £27,986, as compared with £29,662 on the opening day last For the Trial Plate Equitant was a liberal-priced favourite, with Leisure next best backed. Equitant was in front from start to finish, being followed down the back by Whenuatonga Evening Hero, Leisure, Potoaform and Look Out. The favourite was well clear at the turn, with Leisure a couple of lengths ahead of Evening Hero, Good Acre and Look Out. Leisure got up to within a length of Equitant, who was easing up at the post, with Look Out six lengths back, eight lengths ahead of Potoaform and Kilorell. Equitant stayed on better today. Leisure went a good race, while Look Out impressed as an early improver. For the First Hack Hurdles, Skyrider carried half as much again as Aurora Borealis, but that did not pre vent the latter from winning. Past the stands the first time Borsalene -was showing the way to Call Again, Vinella Some Red, Four Aces, Red Lane, Skyrider and Aurora Borealis. The lastnamed moved up over the next cir cuit, and went up to Vinella who had taken the lead, the order at the last fence being Vinella, Aurora Borealis, Borsalene and Call Again. The favourite came on to win easily by two lengths, with Call Again beating Vinella by a neck for second money. Bor-

salene and Skyrider followed. The winner scored comfortably, as Awapuni form indicated she would. Call Again, vigorously ridden, beat Vinella in the run home. Borsalene was beaten after making the pace, while Skyrider had ever chance. Acora was an even money favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, nearly four times as well backed as Cord Thoinond, and the favourite duly landed. Rule Britannia, Quinola, Arrowzone, Acora, Lord Thomond and Royal Queen was the order from the barrier, while into the straight Rule Britannia and Quinola were followed by Acora, Lord Thomond, Arrowzone, Royal Queen and Arisus. Acora hit the front at the distance, and there was nothing else in it, the favourite winning by two lengths, with Lord Thomond two lengths ahead of Arisus, followed by Rule Britannia, Royal Queen and Dick Whittington. Acora had an easy win, while Lord Thomond went a good race. Arisus finished well and might have won, better ridden, while Rule Britannia showed pace. The Cashier-Avro bracket was twice as well backed as Hoy lake for the Marton Cup, with the others evenly supported. Otairi and Full Mark, Cashier and Avro, and Dolomite and Singleton raced in pairs down the straight. Down the back stretch Full Mark was just ahead of Otairi, with Hoylake on the outside of Cashier and Avro, followed by Singleton, while, turning for home, Full Mark, Otairi, Hoylake, Cashier, Singleton and Avro was the order. Cashier poked his head in front at the distance, but then Singleton put in a claim and reached the judge half a length in front of Full Mark, who was a similar distance ahead of Avro, Hoylake, Otairi, Cashier, the four being almost in line, with Otairi apparently third, though Avro was thus placed. The winner showed the expected improvement on Awapuni form. Full Mark went a good race, and the best of the others was Otairi. The favourite was well beaten at the finish. Statuary and Glenartney were a wellbacked pair in the Dash Hack Handicap, but they went under in the finish to Habit, who was first to show out, being followed from the barrier rise by Some Acre, Abbey Queen and Glenartney. After a furlong Abbey Queen streaked to the front, followed by Glenartney and Habit, with Some Acre nearest as they turned for home. Once well in line, Habit headed Glenartney, and then Statuary challenged. In the finish, Habit beat Glenartney by a neck with Statuary a head away. Three lengths away Abbey Queen, Warfille and Some Acre were next to finish. Habit was quietly fancied and won well. Glenartney had had enough, while Statuary was going on with it. Nothing else had a chance. Five started for the Railway Handicap, Freehold being the favourite at a good price. Juggle moved up first, but Freehold streaked to the front, showing Juggle, Keddar, Broad Acre and The Raiser the way down the back: Freehold was still in front across the top, being followed into the straight by Broad Acre and Keddar. At the distance The Raider was coming through on the rails, but could not go on with it, Keddar taking on the task of chasing Freehold, failing by a head to catch the favourite. Two lengths back was The Raider, with Juggle fourth. Freehold only just won, well ridden by young Farrell. The second horse, Keddar, ran a good race, but The Raider was kept too far back early. Goldlike and Thrift were good favourites for the New Year Hack Handicap, but Fine Acre surprised backers. Patearoa and Thrift showed the way out of the straight to Phastar, Goldlike, Rich Harvest and Fine Acre. Down the back Phastar was out in front of Fine Acre, Thrift, Patearoa, Goldlike and Callamart, but, turning for home, Fine Acre was just in front of Phastar, with Thrift, Patearoa, Goldlike and Callamart in a bunch behind them. Fine Acre stayed on in the run to the judge, and won by two lengths from Patearoa, who beat Thrift by a length for second place. Phastar, Rich Harvest and Goldlike were next to finish. Fine Acre beat the sprinters for pace. Patearoa was again consistent, but Thrift ran only a fair race. High Falutin’ was at a short price in the Stewards’ Handicap, and duly won. Brigadier Bill and Second Thought were the leaders down the back, followed by High Falutin’, Malayan, Roi de Val and Briar Root, and round the home turn. Brigadier Bill was the pilot for High Falutin’, Second Thought and Roi de Val, but, in the straight, High Falutin’ asserted himself and went on to win by four lengths from Second Thought, who beat Briar Root by a length and a half for second place.
