Mr and Mrs Elliot Myers left Christchurch last evening for Wellington. Miss Grace Lyes, and Miss L. Cobley, Opawa, are spending their holidays in Timaru. Madame Ottlee will leave Christchurch on Saturday for a motor tour in the North Island. Mrs C. Ellis, x~nd, who was the guest of her mother, Mrs 11. J. Otley, left for the north last night. The Misses Riach, of Maori Hill, Dunedin, are the guests of Mrs A. Shepherd, of Linwood. Mr and Mrs A. Stewart, Hamilton Avenue, Fendalton, are spending a holiday at Akaroa. Mrs E. Harris and Miss Elizabeth Harris, Cashmere Hills, are returning from Timaru to-day. Miss Olga Wellard-King left by the ferry steamer last night to spend a holiday with her cousin, Mrs David Buick, “ Cloverlea,” Palmerston North. Miss Carol West-Watson has returned from a trip to Japan, where she attended the Institute of Pacific Relations Conference. In the recent State examination for nurses Miss Ailsa Fleming, of Christchurch, was successful in passing with honours. Miss Fay Palmer, who has completed her training, has resigned from the nursing staff of tlie Christchurch Hospital, and is shortly leaving for a holiday in the South. The engagement is announced of Vera, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Brown, Belfast, to Raymond, second son of Mr and Mrs S. W. Sewell, Ruapuna, Ashburton. The engagement is announced of Helen Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Bruce, Windyridge, Geraldine, to William Manifold Watson, eldest son of the late W. F. An enjoyable evening of dancing to celebrate the coming of the New Year was given at the Federal Hotel on Tuesday night by the proprietor and proprietress, Mr and Mrs T. G. Lewis. Most of the hotel guests and members of the staff were present, making in all more than one hundred couples. Most of those present were in fancy dress, which added to the festive appearance of the gaily-decorated lounge and jazz room. Everyone took part in the dancing, and as midnight struck all joined hands to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” Mr Lewis wished all those present the best of good fortune for 1930, and there was a general exchange of greetings. The company thanked Mr and Mrs Lewis by singing “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.”

Mr and Mrs Freeborn/Johnston, who are on their way to America from Australia, are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Johnston was well known in Christchurch as Miss Kitty Reading. In the recent Associated Board examinations in music Miss Beryl BiggWither w r as successful in passing the final grade in pianoforte. In pianoforte also, Miss Myra Oakey was successful in passing the. Intermediate Grade. Both candidates are pupils of Miss Olive Cooper, L.A.B. Another record in the motoring world has been established by a woman, the Hon Mrs Chetwynd, who drove her car for 996 miles in twelve hours, at an average speed of 82.97 miles per hour, at Brooklands, states an American exchange. In doing this, Mrs Chetwynd has beaten the record held by Mr and Mrs Urquhart Dykes, of 81 miles per hour for the same time. A happy gathering of guests of the Waverley Private Hotel, Wellington, met the new proprietors, Mr and Mrs J. J. Dickson, late of Dixieland (Christchurch), on Christmas Day to make them a presentation as a token of esteem. The presentation was made by Mr F. Cray on behalf of the guests. In making the presentation Mr Cray said that they appreciated the reorganisation made by Mr Dickson. In responding, Mr Dickson thanked the guests for their token of appreciation.
