OVAL TO BE FIT FOR M.C.C. MATCH.

TWELVE NEW TERRACES BUILT ON EMBANKMENT.

An inspection of the Oval at Lancaster Park this morning by Mr W. L. King, of the Grounds Committee, and newspaper representatives, was reassur. ing, after the recent discussions, in that it appears fairly certain that the wicket and outfield for the Canterbury-M.C.C. match will be in good order. There has been a great deal of work put in on the ground, the best topdressing possible was obtained, and sufficient men were put on to enable Mr Hallam, the groundsman, to give his undivided attention to the Oval, and have adequate help thereon. The pitch at present gives promise of being fast and true, and wearing well. The top dressing is binding very well. Should there be no rain by the end of this week, and a dry spell appear likely, it may be necessary to water the wicket. One of the difficulties in that connection is that a senior game is set down for the Oval on Saturday, and there is a possibility of injury to the pitch by fieldsmen. That would be accentuated if the pitch was at all soft. The outfield shows a great improvement. There are still some rough patches, but watering and rolling before the match should smooth them out sufficiently. The practice wickets have been in regular use by the Canterbury representatives, and are standing up to it well.

There have been twelve new terraces constructed at the top of the embankment. These are being covered with screenings.
