GOVERNMENT ASKED TO GRANT SUBSIDY.
PROPOSALS FOR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
At its meeting last night the City Council referred the question of making a grant for the provision of a week’s work for the'unemployed, to the Finance Committee for consideration at a special meeting to be held to-day. In connection with the matter the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, this morning telegraphed to the Prime Minister asking him if the Government would agree to subsidise any grant made by the council up to £IOOO at the rate of £1 for £l. A reply has been received from Sir Joseph Ward to the effect that the request will receive early consideration by Cabinet.
