CARING FOR THE SHIP’S PASSENGERS.
Special Train. The passengers and crew of the Manuka left by special train this morning for Dunedin. Most likely they would board the train at Ratahui, a few miles from the scene of the wreck, and proceed to Sterling, which is on the main South line. Cargo For Christchurch. The Union Steam Ship Company advise that there was about 200 tons of cargo for Christchurch. Ship's Complement. The ship’s complement numbered 91, consisting of the captain and four officers, seven engineers, eleven able seamen, nine firemen, six trimmers, and three greasers, the remainder being cooks and stewards. Nautical Inquiry. A nautical inquiry will be held at an early date. The court will consist of a magistrate and two master mariners. Unfounded Rumour. There has been a rumour around the city that Wirth’s Circus was on board the Manuka, but that is not true. The circus crossed on the previous trip about three weeks ago. Replacing the Manuka. Asked this morning if immediate arrangements would be made for a ship to take up the Manuka's running. Mr W. H. Blundell Price, local manager of the Union Company, said that at present he was unable to say what would be done.
