RABBI FAVOURED IN EGMONT CUP.

STRONG FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW’S RACES. (By MARTIAN.) k The presence of Star Stranger, Con centrate and Seatown, Auckland Cup candidates, and Cimabue, Lady Quex and Havering, Railway Handicap contestants, in the Flying Handicap, will invest the Egmont Racing Club’s summer meeting, which commences at Hawera to-morrow, with a lot of interest. Star Stranger is one of the favourites for the big Auckland race, and if he shapes well in his engagement to-mor-row he may be the favourite on Boxing Day at Ellerslie. Lady Quex is in great demand for the big Auckland sprint, and a good showing at Hawera would be very satisfactory to her admirers. The other events have drawn strong fields, and the meeting promises to be one of the most successful in the club’s history. Horomea’s Prospects. The day’s sport will commence with the Ohawe Hurdle Handicap, in which Brigadier Bill, with 10.6, is top-weight. The All Red hurdler has not had a race since he scored on the second day at the last Wellington meeting in October, with 9.11, but he won so easily then that the rise of 91b should not stop him. Horomea is likely to be a nuisance to the others. She was beaten only a head by Elysianor on the first day at Feilding, and, although she failed next day, her prospects now look very bright, especially if the track is at all holding. Vivo has been in the money lately, and should give a good account of herself. Novar is due, and under 9.12 should be close up. Of the others Royal Acre appeals most. Horomea and Brigadier Bill’s performances look the best, and they should fight out the finish. Clever in Demand.

Clever won so nicely at Feilding that she will be in great demand for the Juvenile Handicap, if saddled up. She has an engagement in the following race, the Tokaora Hack Handicap, and will be hard to beat in whichever event she is sent after. Hunting Day is likely to make his presence felt in the Juvenile race. .He won the Novice Handicap nicely on the second day at Feilding, and is a good sort. Valpre may need the race, and Just an Idea is useful. A filly who started off the season well is Isa, second to Simba in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes. She failed subsequently at Auckland after showing a lot of speed. If she has done the necessary work her chances would appeal. Green Linnet may be the best of the others, but probably Clever and Hunting Day will provide the winner. Roman Pearl in Form. As stated above, Clever is down to contest the Tokaora Hack Handicap, and her chances again appeal strongly if she is reserved for this event. Just So has a lot of speed, as she demonstrated when she scored from a big field in the Hokio Hack Handicap at Levin, and a repetition of that form will see her prominent. Fernden is a recent winner, who has not yet done his best, whilt St Melba disappointed at Otaki, and again was never in the picture at Woodville. Roman Pearl has run consistently in the north, having several consecutive second placings to her credit, including one behind Duellona in the Stanley Handicap at Takapuna. With hef* handy weight she should be in the money. Clever, if reserved, looks the best, and in her absence Roman Pearl and Just So may pay the dividends.

Egmont Cup. A strong field has been got together to contest the Egmont Cup, with Star Stranger at the head of affairs with 9.4. The Martian gelding is coming on nicely in his preparation, and every gallop is bringing him to his best. At Woodville he finished like a train over six furlongs, and the chances are that over the extra distance to-morrow he will give something of his best. Rabbi won convincingly at Feilding with 8.8 after his other recent successes, and a 61b rise is not going to worry him. Paganelli’s performance over a mile and a quarter will give the scribes something to write about, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes. A distance up to a mile has suited him most, and under those circumstances he will not be fancied. However, he is in astute hands, and it would not surprise this writer to see him in the fighting line at the finish. Concentrate may not be quite tuned up, but Bright Glow, despite her recent failure, is likely to show decided improvement. Star Area’s track efforts have been of the improving order, but a race would be to his advantage. Seatown has a handy weight, and if he races up to his best form he will appeal to many. First Acre may not see out the distance, but The Hawk has a chance with 7.9. Spearmiss will have friends, in view of her Riccarton form, but she does not appear to be consistent. Rabbi looks like being the hardest to beat, and perhaps Star Stranger and Seatown will chase him home.

Lady Quex V. Cimabue. Cimabue’s great effort at Feilding, when he easily accounted for the Feilding Stakes, will have the effect of sending him out a warm favourite for the Flying Handicap, and although there are some opposed to him who will keep him travelling, it is hard to go past the Leighton sprinter. Lady Quex is sure to go a great race. She won the Cheltenham Handicap at the Takapuna meeting in fine style, and since then has been favourite for the Railway Handicap at Auckland. Her running wilt be of great interest to her admirers. Havering appears to have lost form, but he carried 8.3 into third place l in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton, and with only 41b more he would

need to be only approaching his best to get the money. Goshawk has shown improvement lately and should soon be a winner. Gold Dawn is a possibility, on the strength of her third to The Raider and Kaihoro at Feilding, while Llanore was also third to The Raider and Gold Cure at Feilding on the first day. Knightlike is improving. Cimabue and Lady Quex should salute the judge, and perhaps Gold Dawn may be the best of the others. The Nolan Cup. A big field is engaged in the Nolan Gold Cup, with the Riccarton winner Dolomite in pride of place. The imported horse won the Otaio Plate so nicely that he looks a good prospect over eight furlongs and a half. Juggle may find the distance too far, but Austerity will finish on well. Make Up and Imateagirl, who race under the same colours as Rabbi, will be a favourite bracket, there being no doubt about their going the full journey. Chopin has run good races lately, but Pompeius has been steeplechasing, which may have slowed him down on the flat. Skyrider and Democratic are both possibilities. Marica appeals most of the others. The bracket Make Up and Imateagirl will be hard to beat, and Dolomite should be close up.

Manly In Form. Manly’s third to Melissa and Miss Ransom at Feilding suggests early improvement, and he should show up in the Whareroa Handicap. Mithra, from J. T. Jamieson’s stable, ran a good second to Refresher at Takapuna, and if the distance does not trouble her she is a likely sort. Royal Lineage, Macroom and Wenday have all been in the limelight recently. Manly and Mithra look the goods.

Make Up—lf Reserved. The day’s racing will conclude with the Waipapa Hack Handicap. Make Up may be reserved, in which case he would see a fairly short price. Tenacre and Calamine have shown improvement lately, while Singer is sure to go a merry seven furlongs. Of the others, Monaloff. looks the pick. Make Up appeals, and perhaps Singer will provide the strongest opposition. The following is the programme:—
