SOCIAL AND DANCE.
The patients of the Coronation Hospital and the Upper and Middle Sanatoria held their Christmas break-up dance on Saturday night. The diningroom, which was used for dancing,- was decorated for the occasion, as were the verandahs, where supper was served. About two hundred patients, guests and members of the staff were present. A team of nurses in football togs provided a startling diversion, and rendered an authentic Maori war-cry in an awe-in-spiring manner. A good many of the patients turned out in fancy dress, and gave quite a carnival air to the proceedings.. Competitions of various kinds provided a lot of merriment. Amongst those present were:—The superintendent (Dr I. C. M’lntyre), Dr and Mrs Pemberton, the matron (Miss Trumble), Miss M’Leod, Sisters Congreve and Watt, Mrs Treleaven (representing the Red Cross), Miss Thompson, Mrs Wark and Mr A. Smith (representing the Hospital Board). In presenting the prizes after supper, Dr M’lntyre made a felicitous speech, in which he stressed the mutual benefit to be obtained by the co-mingling of the sexes at entertainments of this kind, and, in concluding, he expressed the hope that all present would enjoy their holidays and have a good time. He wished them a healthy and happy New Year. Mr Smith also spoke. During the evening Miss Eileen Grennell sang two songs. The success of the function was due in no small measure to the encouragement of Dr M’lntyre, who gave the patients every opportunity to get arrangements in hand. The matron, Miss Trumble, also rendered great assistance, particularly in preparing the supper. Several city firms donated gifts, which were much appreciated, and the thanks of the patients are extended to all these, particularly to Beath and Co., who supplied the cakes, and to Miss Tilleyshort and her orchestra, who provided music for the dancing. A thorourghly delightful evening terminated with th% singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
